@Alonso_GD Literally open your eyes. Surprising how this effect emerged after mass immigration isn’t it. Destroying a high trust society tends to have these effects.

@mgoldingmd @sanilrege Yes I’m not arguing in favour of reductionism. It just seems that explanation is a broader/ deeper (pick your metaphor) picture of causality. Causality that can also include abstract concepts. Explaining the seen in terms of the unseen etc.

Yeah. Interesting question. I think I disagree. Causal structure answers “what events/mechanisms/interventions/etc. produced this outcome?” Explanation, on the other hand, answers why is this the right pattern of causality to attend to, across possible situations, and what deeper rule makes the outcome intelligible? In The Fabric of Reality, David Deutsch asks why a particular copper atom is at the tip of the nose of the Churchill statue in Parliament Square. A lowest-level physical account could, in principle, trace particles and initial conditions. But even if such a complete microphysical prediction all the way from the Big Bang were possible, it still would not provide explanatory understanding. The explanation involves high-level circumstances. What was Churchill’s role in British history, discussions of artistry and statue-making, understanding of the durability of bronze/brass, how is public commemoration done in British culture, etc?

It's an unfortunate week for any conservative content creator when they're forced to ask themselves, "Whither the Candace Owens-Laura Loomer feud?" We're coming off such a week, so you can imagine the mood I'm in. In the latest salvo in the battle… w-j.co/s/1189e

@mgoldingmd @sanilrege Isn’t explanation just a more fine-grained causality though. And given fallibilism we can expect even the causal structure of even well-established explanations to become more clear over time.

You are so right. We really need to understand why. Some argue (and I agree) that science is ultimately about explanation, not making causal statements. For example, two defective alleles of the PAH gene caused mental retardation in kids 100 years ago prior to understanding the explanation of phenylketonuria. So intellectual disability of this type was *caused* by differences in genes. But once we understood the explanation, those genes no longer caused the mental retardation. To the extent children now develop PKU intellectual disability, there is an environmental cause of the disease — failure to decrease phenylalanine in the child’s diet. So “causes” change all the time which is why science, in my view should not be about “causes”, per se. Explanations, on the other hand, can be timelessly true (thus scientific?), for example we now understand the explanation of how those genes interact with the environment to create intellectual disability. That explanation may be timeless, because it was as true in the past as it is now. You focus so heavily on explanation in psychiatry, which is why I appreciate your education and writing so much. I think it is an attempt to make psychiatric understanding, *scientific*.

@smg1664 Our officers were misled at the scene, including denial of weapon use. They quickly switched to life-saving aid within minutes but, as laid out in our statement, the medical evidence shows that the injuries were not survivable. A very sad case, our thoughts are with his family.

A thought experiment. A white British boy is found guilty of stabbing to death a black British boy. The police handcuff the black British boy when he is bleeding out and dying. They refuse to try & save his life. His last words are: “I can’t breathe”. The police later issue a weak apology. But no heads roll. Nobody is sacked. The police body cam footage is not released. Now ask yourself: What would Keir Starmer, Yvette Cooper, Sadiq Khan, Jess Phillips and countless other MPs and celebrities be doing right now? We know exactly what they would be doing. They would be protesting. Marching. Screaming. Demanding the footage be released. And dropping one video and statement after another on social media. Now have a look around at what they are all doing about the Henry Nowak case. And that is exactly why millions of British people talk about “two-tier Britain”.

The man who filmed himself hurling abuse at actress Dame Helen Mirren and her husband Taylor Hackford in the streets of London has been identified as Tom Carroll. A self described Corbynista and, incredibly, an “anti fascist.” Yet his social media history tells a very different story, with posts pushing neo Nazi propaganda, claiming Jews declared war on Germany and were responsible for WW2, praising Hitler, and even spreading the grotesque falsehood that Anne Frank’s diary was fabricated.
