This is disgusting. Waitrose has *sacked* a 54-year-old worker after 17 years of loyal service for stopping a shoplifter. This is exactly why good people don’t intervene anymore. Waitrose should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

Walker Smith was sacked for trying to prevent a repeat shoplifter from stealing Easter eggs from a Waitrose Store. Smith had worked there for 17 years. Apparently stopping thieves is against company policy. As a former shopkeeper can I say that policy is insane. No wonder there were more than 500,000 recorded shoplifting offences last year but we all know it’s running into millions of thefts each year. Waitrose should take this have a go hero back pronto- but if not another retailer should snap him up. The CEO of Waitrose needs to review this bonkers stupid policy too- shoplifting is theft and must be stopped otherwise it will further spiral and it’s the ordinary customer who will pay with higher prices. Wake up Waitrose and smell the coffee- before someone nicks it!

@comments_connie There's been a co-ordinated pile on about the triple lock this weekend, aimed at demonising pensioners, and probably organised by politicians and activists. It's not organic and it's totally beyond contempt.

All the arguments about pensioners in the last few days is proof, if it were needed, that people feel they can say what the hell they like about older people, which they wouldn't dare say about any other group in our society. This is the UK in 2026!☹️

Yeah I suddenly walked into a TV presenting job with the click of a finger… I worked in Sainsbury’s, for EDF Energy, the water board, call centres, all from age 17, just to get money. I didn’t care what job I did, I just needed to support myself. I said yes to everything, trusting that I’d one day get there and everything would work itself out. I didn’t turn down jobs because it wasn’t my field or what I wanted or dreamed of right that minute or think I was above anything or anyone. I had no money. I never went to uni. I saved hard for a £5,000 journalism course, I then worked like a dog at local newspapers (still on minimum wage) and at a bookmaker at the same time doing 20 hour days for years just to keep grinding. I spent more hard years commuting to London and back, doing graveyard shifts at papers then waiting at Blackfriars station at 3 in the morning to get home to Sussex and start my other job at 9am. It nearly killed me. For years. 16 years it took me to get here. And you know what? I loved it all. I loved the journey, I loved the dark moments asking myself if it was all worth it. I loved the wins. I loved the hard lessons. And I love what I’m doing now. Yes I have the best job in the world (for me) and I’m incredibly grateful. And I’m still grinding. I’ve just done 14 days straight, travelling to Texas, Florida, then DC. Doing a three hour show every night. But I recognise how fortunate I am. I always have, even when I was stacking shelves. I didn’t just turn up at a studio and start presenting. Most importantly I never played the victim.

@Nathanswfc2004 I wouldn’t worry. At some point he’ll have to publish a manifesto, and when people see 50% income tax, 30% corporation tax, 55mph motorway limits with blanket 20mph, loads of trans nonsense, blasphemy laws on paper, he’ll be done.

We offered to bring forward 1,000 specialty training places for resident doctors. The BMA rejected this. It's now impossible to get those places live in time for this year. This doesn't mean fewer doctors. Resident doctors will still be in post, treating patients.
