@mayorofstellies We were ready to board Lift to Joburg and told there would be no more flights out of Cape Town (domestic at least). Home.

@uraId10T69 We've already see what happened to the Garden route, is the West coast next? Probably needs an airport to fully get there.

Every 2 or so years I ask this question. Afterwards, I create a map to show where the most interest is. Here's the question: If you could buy shares in any town or city in South Africa, which one would it be? You don't have to move there, you just own a part of the place.

@FlySafair is your 2026 policy to charge R30 for check in? Had to pay on check in and then trouble scanning at the chaotic boarding for FA187.

It feels remarkable to say it but this is a brave stand.

Air pollution must be recognised as a public health issue. For #CleanAirDay we are publishing our new report 'A breath of fresh air', which highlights the growing evidence about the increased range of health impacts linked to air pollution. With impacts on both mortality and healthy life expectancy, the effects of toxic air on individuals, society, the economy and the #NHS are huge. 🔗Read the new report: ow.ly/F3yq50Wc7wr

A thread on decline of UK garment industry. Reminds me of 1990s Durban - half of all SA garment jobs were lost as firms sourced from China. Was partially arrested with indus policy, but challenges remain. Even if indus policy pretends it is not about geography, it often is.

🧵 You may recall a spate of stories a few years ago about appalling working conditions & abysmally low pay in Leicester's clothes factories. The hope was those stories would shame businesses into improving working conditions. But here's what ACTUALLY happened next... 👇

Outstandingly uplifting Upstart session by @alexprocter101 at @FranLitFest. Writes like she talks; a genuine, compelling voice. Left with renewed hope, determination and energy.

A notable decrease in recorded crimes underscores the potential effectiveness of #SANParks' safety measures. November marked a peak in collaborative efforts, indicating enhanced safety outcomes through inter-agency cooperation.

Speaking of sinkholes, what are your favorite underground novels? My top three subterranean novels are: 'Level 7' (1959) by Mordecai Roshwald 'Etidorhpa' (1895) by John Uri Lloyd 'Icosaméron' (1788) by Giacomo Casanova.

Still remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. Then did the 2000km drive to Harare to hear @tchapmanonline sing it live. Still raw and what a version. Thank you.

Some of you are looking for a video link to the full version of sunday's performance, not just a snippet and in the best quality possible. Good news! @RecordingAcad published it on their website. Click on the link in the first thread to watch it. Enjoy 🤩 #Grammys #tracychapman

@rsutaria Google meets air pollution. Underlying data quality and coverage will need attention but such a powerful tool.

Big Tech offers hyper-local (up to 500 meters) real-time air quality data (commercially) for half-billion locations across the world! This renders the whole ‘reference grade’ network used to awareness/information purpose to be redundant now. cloud.google.com/blog/products/…

@melissafourie @AirIQ_Inc I'm not sure we can respond to this data set. Sound information is the basis of responsible action. Then, if it's even half the health-limit, we must take the actions you recommend.

@Quentin_Hurt @AirIQ_Inc What is our response to the data? What happens when we record hazardous air quality like on the East Rand and the Vaal today? Are we issuing warnings for people to stay indoors? Raising awareness and providing equipment like masks? Taking measures to stop the pollution?

What was air quality like in South Africa today? 🧵 According to @AirIQ_Inc which draws data from SAAQIS plus satellite modelling where no sensors exist, the following towns in Gauteng today has air quality that is unhealthy for sensitive groups ⬇️

A picture is worth a 1000 words. SA has imported $2.5 bn worth of #solarpanels, lithium-ion #batteries and inverters in the 1st half of 2023. So great to see the exponential rollout of #RenewableEnergy in SA, but what a missed opportunity for local industrialisation!

Incredible to think how in a few short years the domain traditionally belonging to governments has quickly been taken over by the private sector, and the rapid expansion of this industry. We are finally entering the real race for space...
