The main villain, Taga, is an ancient airbender during their golden age. He saw the rise of the Earth Kingdom and also saw them kill all his friends so he sees every nation as a threat.
His entire plan is to use some ancient spirit staff to bring back air benders by giving bending to non benders. He quite literally tells Aang other nations can't be trusted and they need to stick together because their both air benders.
