Macron, Sánchez, Starmer all openly vouch for social media censorship with bogus reasons such as fighting misinformation. They NEVER cared about this when the twitter files were published. They want their own 'Ministry of Truth' to control the algorithm with their narratives.

@steven1976a @Ajarncom A teacher in my condo was using this method for his non-o (working without a work permit) but it was closer to 20k-ish. Basically they put the funds and hold on to your bank book and passport until it's done.

@Ajarncom They can be very expensive I find. I know people that are paying 30+k to renew a non-o for a visa that actually costs only 1900bht. This may be something to do with the agent arranging about the finances and showing money but I'm not sure.

Another topic that divides Thai Twitter down the middle - visa agents. For me, they can provide a good service but they're a last resort - to be considered if I am physically unable to go to immigration (and even then I'd probably send a family member) I just hate letting my passport out of my sight. I've always been this way. MT @FPetet My friend has used an agent several times to extend his retirement visa without problems. In December he used the same agent again, but still hasn't received his passport back. He is close to 90 days overstay if they haven't already done the extension. He calls every day, but is met with excuses. "Staff gone home". " hasn't arrived yet.", but no promise on when it will arrive. He is now at his wits end because he is powerless to do anything.

@seftonhanley @akarlin More competition would benefit consumers and drive wages up for Thais while decreasing the asset gap and household debt but certain people made sure that wasn't going to happen in 2006 and 2014.

Thailand doesnt want competition.. Low effort captive tourist markets are preferred.. Thats why the resistance to allowing others into the market who could offer a better service at a lower price. Sure the customer benefits, and lower costs drive efficiency, which Thailand badly needs to be globally competitive, but thats not how Thais see it.. They see it as 'their' jobs or work being 'taken'.

Thailand has demographically peaked and its human capital is mid. It's not going to become rich the classical way. I think it should consider opening up its economy to the masses of long-term digital nomads who make it their de facto home. Having them is better than not having them, but restricting them to teaching locals English, spending their money on $3 Pad Thais, and otherwise legally forbidding them from working for local clients is suboptimal. Allowing at least the long-term nomads to fully participate in the domestic economy seems like a no brainer.
류승일@Yussoonn_

And yet Thailand has achieved the exceptional and the unthinkable. It has an aging population and an extremely low total fertility rate, with a still intermediate level of wealth, without being a technological power. The country is aging before it has fully caught up with developed nations. A unique case in the world.

@akarlin Digital nomads are even less relevant than boomer retirees for the overall economy. Thailand doesn't want competition it's protecting a certain segment of the population. Hence all the military coups and huge gap in asset inequality.

@c3opo It all depends on when the flights arrive and they don't schedule enough immigration officers.

@KristoferA @tri26 In countries where people aren't up to their eyeballs in debt people refill their tanks full every time they visit a gas station. Now half the country who usually drives around on 20-30% have topped up 🙃

BREAKING: The Constitutional Court on Wednesday has voted 6–3 to accept a petition questioning whether the use of barcodes and QR codes on ballot papers in the 2026 election violates the constitution. The court convened at 09:30 for its weekly session. One key agenda item was whether to accept a petition submitted by the Ombudsman, following complaints from members of the public. The petition asks the court to rule on whether the conduct of the 8 February 2026 election complied with constitutional provisions, particularly Sections 83 and 85. Complainants argue that printing barcodes and QR codes on ballots may violate voters’ rights and freedoms, as the codes could potentially be traced back to individual voters and reveal how they voted, undermining the principle of secret ballots. The court resolved to accept the case for consideration and has ordered relevant parties to submit written explanations. #Thailand #EC
