@tomwarren Don’t they lose money? Not a surprise they’re trying to shore things up. Money losing and losing subscribers, prices will go up there just like in the US.

The problem is that you’re comparing federal and state gas tax to just this proposed federal EV tax. In my state the state charges $175 to register an EV so adding this in would bring it to $305. My state also charges a per KW charging tax and they’ve raised those taxes 3 times in the last 3 years. Obviously this varies by state, but so do gas taxes. If you’re comparing combined federal and state gas taxes you have to compare them to combined federal and state EV fees. Not doing so is akin to the logic my state used to implement their per KW charging tax. They did so because they had no road taxes on EVs and that wasn’t fair…of course they forgot to mention the $175 a year registration fees that only EVs pay and that those funds go into the road repair fund…or the fact that six months prior they had raised it from $75 using the same reasoning. but you know, those were fees, not taxes.

@SawyerMerritt Average gas driver pays around ~$400 a year in federal and state fuel taxes. $130 isn’t fair, to me it’s a discount. EV owners have been free riding on roads paid for by gas drivers for a decade. Seems like they’re playing catch up

U.S. House lawmakers have proposed bipartisan legislation that ‌would require electric vehicles to pay a $130 fee to pay for road repairs annually and $35 for some plug-in hybrid models. The House is working on a five-year highway reauthorization bill expected to ‌cost more than $500 billion ahead of the current law expiration on Sept 30, 2026. Most revenue for federally funded road repairs is collected through diesel and gasoline taxes, which EVs do not pay. I think $130 is fair since over time there will be fewer gas vehicles on the road generating tax revenue, They'll need to make up the difference somewhere so they can keep repairing roads, etc. Full bill text in thread below:

@BillCassidy it’s unfortunate you lost, and I commend you on bucking the Republican trend to say elections were stolen when they weren’t, but I also have to say you fucked us by confirming the Democrat Kennedy.

@DMCtooTM3p @TeslaCharging @MdeZegher If I could add one and only one super charger location it would be Rice Lake. Spooner wouldn’t be bad either, but Rice Lake would be my first choice.

Finally, after almost 4 months in construction. I feel like PSU’s don’t seem to save any time in this state from a groundbreaking to completion perspective. @MdeZegher Please, Find a way to get something installed between Duluth MN and Altoona WI on the US 53 corridor. It’s a difficult stretch in Winter months and I’ve had to go back to my spare Gas vehicle during that period. I drive it twice a week for my job.

@SawyerMerritt @Tesla It's just a bold face fucking lie that's like the base model with the nothing done to it that is not what they are paying. The police conversion is basically double the price of the initial vehicle. And people have to actually do the physical conversion. Good luck

The City of Newport, Kentucky, is adding four additional @Tesla Model Y police vehicles to its fleet. The city estimated that its total savings over five years for four Teslas is $148,311. Newport Police Chief Chris Fangman said the Tesla is cheaper and a better product than, say, a more common police vehicle like a Chevy Equinox or Dodge Durango. The Newport Police Department first added three Tesla Model 3 vehicles in December 2023 and then requested two more in November 2024 after the success of the first three. In January 2025, Newport requested the Tesla Model Y electric vehicle for use, initially in the planning, development and code departments. Then, in June 2025, the commission approved four more Tesla Model Y electric vehicles for its police fleet. Great to see more Police Departments adding more Teslas in their patrol fleets! It’s $7,415 per car per year. For the four new ones that’s $29,662 a year, for all 9 they now have that’s $66,739 (assuming the existing ones have the same savings). That’s a lot especially considering they consider them to be better vehicles. And yes, there’s plenty of room in the back for offenders.

@SawyerMerritt @Tesla That's about $7k savings per car. Not a real staggering number in the grand scheme of things. Are they able to put offenders in the backseat or are they just Community Support cars?

@LadyJaneZylla @tomwarren @Microsoft @Xbox @asha_shar They basically already do this with Samsung and LG. It doesn’t run the XBox OS, because it isn’t running games locally, but they have a gamepass app that streams games and comes with I think 3 months of gamepass for $1 or something like that.

We'll hear about some charging networks, including well known ones, in the US that will be acquired. Soon. I'm betting a few deals close this year. Consolidation is coming (both in US & EU charging landscape, actually).

@TheEVuniverse I wonder why the Model 3 was down so much? Seems like 3 and Y at this stage in their lifecycle would be pretty in sync in terms of sales. Meaning I would expect both to fall or grow similar amounts not one way up and the other way down.

The number of active Tesla strikers in Stockholm has reportedly fallen from 21 workers to just 9 According to Swedish labor publication DA, most of the defections were tied to controversy surrounding strike compensation issues and new 40-hour weekly picketing requirements. "It’s a disaster. In our group, half has disappeared in just two weeks." -- one striker said Full article on EVwire: evwire.com/p/if-metall-un…

@kidsmoove @JezCorden I do. I have an 85 inch OLED and like to sit on the couch over at my desk where I work all day. I rarely use my desktop because I hate using Windows UI to game, it’s why I almost always play on console. Adding Xbox Mode is going to make me use my desktop a lot more.

@SawyerMerritt Unfortunately, Japanese brands are already getting hummered by Chinese brands - and it will only get worse. As TCO of EVs drops further, and given the lack of investment in EV tech and infrastructure (battery supply), this will become an existantional threat to these brands.

Honda is reportedly delaying five next-generation models for multiple years because it lost so much money on EVs (-$15.7B). These vehicle redesigns have been delayed: • Honda Odyssey (current design came out in 2017): Delayed to 2030 • Honda Accord: Delayed to 2030 • Honda HR-V: Delayed to 2032 • Acura MDX: Delayed to 2031 • Acura Integra: Delayed to 2032 Honda reportedly weighed cutting the Odyssey from its lineup for a brief period until the new hybridized model arrived, but decided against it to prevent customers from migrating to other brands. Honda is cancelling the Prologue EV in the US at the end of this year, just two years after it was introduced, which means that starting in January 2027, Honda will no longer have any new EVs for sale in its lineup in America. The company also recently announced that it is exiting the South Korean car business after 23 years because it can't figure out how to compete there. Tough times for Honda.

@blackshark3 @SawyerMerritt EVs aren’t a fad and don’t have anything to do with the pandemic, but we can safely say that if a company just produces crap EVs they’ll lose a lot of money.

When I just got my drivers licence back in the 80s, Honda cars were hot tickets...the VTEC Civic hot hatch, the Accord with flip up headlights, good reliable engines and tranny. They ditched their well established technology and instead went into EV which is just a fad of the pandemic, not to mention they also retained someone who kept designing ugly cars. Ditch the useless Acura line, fire whoever that heads their styling, and keep making ICE cars
