I've posted a couple of dozen technical threads in the last two years that have been popular. Here they are in a thread of threads, very roughly organized into related themes. Let's start w/ little-known classic: mean & median within a standard deviation twitter.com/docmilanfar/st…
Peyman Milanfar@docmilanfar

(1/5) One of the most surprising and little-known results in classical statistics is the relationship between the mean, median, and standard deviation. If the distribution has finite variance, then the distance between the median and the mean is bounded by one standard deviation.

I wrote a comp neuro textbook. Two years ago I began compiling the notes from my undergrad comp neuro course into a single document and the project gradually grew into a proper book. It needs some work before I call it a final draft, but it's 95% done. 1/9

This study is wild - putting the experimenters' arm in casts for two weeks to measure the brain effect of limb disuse. Now that's commitment to science!

@KordingLab Maybe what is happening is our brain is trying and failing to model whatever scenario it is trying to solve for; or increase the probability of. Then through looping, it is signaling the need for more PFC involvement and information gathering or coactivang useful networks.

Is the ability to not needlessly think the same exact thought twice learned or are we humans born with it? I am curious how ANNs can/should learn that.

@GunnarBlohm If I had to hazard a guess, maybe it's because you can't predict it well! Maybe if you touch in once every day you'll become better in modeling and predicting it?

6/n and you mentioned that you just need to sit down and really focus, at some point you might think something stinks, and you will realize the smell is coming from you, it is funny but also true! Thank you for that advice it really did help me!
