The model in mental health is changing. The era of "faulty brain chemistry" is over, the hypotheses debunked, the drugs needlessly dangerous. We're moving to a more compassionate understanding that bad things happen to people and they suffer emotionally and physically as a result

In medicine, "treat" is a statement of intent, not an indication of efficacy. So to answer the question, does marzipan treat anxiety? Absolutely. Results vary. As with any treatment, some may be allergic.
Chris Aiken, MD@chrisaikenmd

Does mirtazapine treat anxiety? ▪ Yes for GAD and anxious #depression. ▪ Possibly for other #anxiety disorders. ▪ No for social anxiety. From a new meta-analysis: psych-partners.com/mirtazapine-fo… #psychiatry #pmhnp #mentalhealth

I genuinely, in a non mean spirited manner, believe no one is “in it for the love of the game.” Usually, people are “in it” because it serves psychological functions, or stabilizes unstable self states.

Christopher Bollas at 80, on being a therapist: “I love it, I still love it. Just hearing what is going on in another person’s mind.” Here’s to my colleagues who are in it for the love of the game. What a cool job we have

Thank god. @ProfRobHoward, your habit of silencing and shaming victims of iatrogenic harm, in addition to making you despicable, is not doing you any favors vocationally.

@DrDoyleSays Admirable. I wonder if those who put you in trauma feel a similar urge to take accountability and make amends with you

Every now and then I am astounded & appalled by how much sh*t I used to think & talk about other people, based on the stupidest, most superficial sh*t possible. Trauma & addiction recovery are real good at putting into perspective what an asshole we've been. I have so many apologies & amends to make.

If you run me down in your car, my body doesn’t care whether or not you « meant it ». The impact and the wound are the same.

@jeffreytee Shrinking your responses and hiding your impact wounds to make the parent more comfortable and to protect them from accountability is a large part of where the trauma resides.

@RLewisTherapy Agreed. It may be because we need a better name than trauma. Because some of those things that happened were just unhappy accidents. I think 'trauma' triggers them in their blame feelings and they don't want that to be any kind of truth.

People whose children have a psychiatric diagnosis can be quite vocal in discrediting the idea that childhood trauma may play a role. Some families need an identified patient and the loss of this scapegoat, even ideologically, can cause meltdowns for the unwell parent.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the mass prescribing of antidepressants, hasn’t made society any happier

@jill_d35 Well done for finding this top-tier fairy. I'm not sure I'd know where to start looking.

Last week we made a fairy garden with my 3 year old granddaughter. She was very pleased but wanted to know when a fairy would move in... I walked all over town today to find this one, but apparently her name is Rosie, and little one is very excited that she's now in residence 😂

From my new blog, Chemistry at the Margins. “On one hand the two unbound particles always explode, which we agree is extreme. But, when bound, an excess of stasis is noted. The wise path is the middle ground, where stochastic detonation is tolerated by a significant effect size.”

If you moved "for college" or "for work" but really moved for peace, you're not alone. Sometimes the best career decision is putting distance between yourself and dysfunction.
