Today in Rock History
May 16, 2010
Ronnie James Dio, singer for Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band Dio, passed away at 67 after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. His career began in 1957 with The Vegas Kings, evolving through several name changes before becoming Elf in 1967. Opening for Deep Purple led to Dio’s collaboration with Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow, launching him to rock legend status. Dio’s final public appearance was at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards on April 8, 2010, where he received the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. His influence on heavy metal and power metal remains immense, with “Dio” still symbolizing one of the genre’s most iconic voices.

After four years full of challenges and hard work, it's time to move on.
I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete. 4 seasons, 3 championships.
I will never forget the love I received from the fans from my very first days.
Catalonia is my place on earth.
Thank you to everyone I met along the way during these beautiful four years.

Was watching champions league soccer on my last 2 flights. Starlink is better in the air than Verizon 5G is in south Phoenix.

I don’t understand why every airline in America — public and private — doesn’t have @Starlink. It’s incredible. You can make FaceTime calls with better reception anywhere in the world 35k feet up in air than most reception on ground. WiFi on planes is infuriatingly bad. Still.

I love to BBQ. My kids love it. If any elected official in LA wants to ban backyard BBQ’ing because of “fire safety” reasons but says zero about the illegal dangerous public fires, illegal encampments or electrical theft happening everyday in our communities, that elected official really hasn’t a clue about public safety or our LA culture in general.

🚨Owner of Health Care Software Company Convicted of 1 BILLION DOLLAR Medicare Fraud Conspiracy
“The Department of Justice crushed one of the most egregious fraud schemes in Florida history,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “This illegitimate operation stole more than $1 billion from American taxpayers — including hundreds of thousands of Medicare beneficiaries. This was cold, calculated, industrial-scale theft targeting the sick and elderly, coercing vulnerable people into buying unnecessary medical equipment. We will not rest until every fraudster ripping off the American people is held accountable.”

@BuzzPatterson I dont think people know how fast weather can change at departure, en route, or arrival airport.

As a retired USAF and Delta pilot with decades in the cockpit, I get asked all the time: “Why is my flight delayed… again?”
Listen, I know it’s a pain in the ass. But shit happens.
Here’s the straight scoop from the flight deck on the most common reasons commercial airliners are delayed. Safety first — always.
1. Weather– Thunderstorms, fog, high winds, or low visibility at your departure, arrival, or even enroute. We don’t fly into trouble. ATC and dispatch reroute or hold us.
2. Mechanical / Maintenance– A minor squawk gets fixed before we push back. Better on the ground than in the air. FAA rules are strict for a reason. Maintenance issues can snowball around the system quickly.
3. Air Traffic Control & Congestion– Too many planes, ground stops, or flow restrictions. Especially at busy hubs like ATL, LAX, or ORD.
4. Crew & Scheduling– Late inbound aircraft means late crew. FAA duty limits and rest requirements kick in. We can’t just swap people instantly.
5. Ground Operations– Baggage loading, fueling, de-icing, catering, or cleaning. A tight turnaround can snowball fast.
Delays are frustrating — I’ve sat through plenty as both a pilot and passenger. But 99% of the time, they’re there to keep you safe.
Next time you’re waiting at the gate, remember: the crew wants to get airborne just as badly as you do. Maybe more.

VP VANCE: "So you're saying that we kicked off 800 fraudulent healthcare providers off of the Medicare system, and not a single one of them called the government and said, 'hey, you made a mistake?'"
DR. OZ: "We've had a handful of calls. We're not sure they're legitimate yet, but it's less than 20 out of 800 and we're auditing them."
VP VANCE:" Unbelievable... At least 780 are not even trying to claim that they're not fraudulent?"
"Those are businesses that we were giving hundreds of millions, in some cases billions of dollars to, not to provide services, but to make a fraudster rich. It's just completely insane."

A pair of senior politicians from a town in Southern California’s high desert — Lancaster Vice Mayor Marvin Crist and city Councilmember Raj Malhi — are under investigation for allegedly receiving money from 🇨🇳 BYD.
Crist and Malhi were dramatically escorted by FBI agents from their homes at gunpoint in a series of raids on Apr 15. Officials seized documents and electronic devices from their homes as part of the sweeping probe.
Agents searched a total of four locations while investigating links between the two men and 🇨🇳 BYD, which is running America’s first trial of electric buses in the city.
Lancaster City Hall and the home of a Bel-Air developer were also searched in the raids.
Details of the federal search warrant reveal that agents were looking for “information pertaining to anything of value given by BYD, directly or indirectly, to an elected official, candidate, committee or political action committee.”
The warrant allowed agents access to phones, computers and other digital devices, including deleted or encrypted data, as well as access to devices protected by fingerprints or facial recognition technology.
The investigation spans activity from 2018 to the present and targets records tied to key individuals, financial transactions, government actions and political contributions.
The agency also sought “information on government actions sought, or contemplated to be sought, by BYD”.
No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.
BYD cars are nowhere on US roads — due in part to security fears that the vehicles are packed with sensors and software that could pose a surveillance risk. They also face a near 100% tariff to not undercut American-made cars.
The company’s link to Lancaster dates back to 2013, when the city was selected as the site of a 550,000-square-foot electric bus factory.
The company has spent at least $250M there, including $53M on the factory alone. It employs more than 750 people and is considered the largest electric bus factory in the US. It’s also BYD’s largest in the nation.
BYD does provide domestically made buses for Lancaster’s public fleet, which went all-electric in 2020. American-made BYD buses are also used in Los Angeles, Anaheim, Albuquerque and Denver.
R. Rex Parris, who has been Lancaster’s mayor for the past two decades, revealed that the FBI contacted City Hall two years ago seeking documents related to its dealings with the federal government.
When the city asked for more time to comply, the FBI dropped the matter, he said.
The probe never stopped. “The concern was that the buses could be used for spying.”
FBI agents seeking evidence on Malhi “have approached many people, asked them to wear a wire to record their calls.” “They interviewed many people.”
BYD has donated to the campaigns of Crist and Malhi, as well as to a pair of political action committees that supported the two politicians.
The developer whose home was searched in Bel Air was also a supporter of Malhi’s campaign.
Jennifer Seguin, a spokesperson for the city of Lancaster, issued a statement saying the city “is not aware of the details” of the FBI’s searches.
The FBI raids came less than 24 hours after a City Council election in which Crist, a retired firefighter, did not seek reelection after 16 years on the council.
Malhi, who joined the council in 2015, on Apr 14 barely lost his seat to a challenger. He had served on the City’s Planning Commission since 2008.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller confirmed that the FBI served search warrants in Lancaster, including City Hall.
“Affidavits in support of the warrants have been sealed by the court and I’m unable to comment as to the nature of the investigation,” Eimiller said.

Comey casually admits, WHILE HE WAS THE FBI DIRECTOR, he had been drinking at a family wedding, left his wife there to keep partying, she came back intoxicated and hit the emergency button, armed agents in their underwear entered his hotel room, and he slept through the whole thing.
He took 63 days vacation days his first year.

A mural honoring slain Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was removed in Providence, Rhode Island, after drawing intense backlash from some local residents and elected officials. Mayor Brett Smiley reportedly said the artwork was “divisive and does not represent” the city.
The mural effort had received major financial backing, with Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe pledging $500,000 toward murals honoring Zarutska and Elon Musk contributing an additional $1 million to the campaign.
