IN 1956, THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT BURNED 6 TONS OF A SCIENTIST'S BOOKS. NOT IN NAZI GERMANY. IN AMERICA. Dr. Wilhelm Reich was an Austrian-born physician, a former student of Sigmund Freud, and one of the most controversial scientists of the 20th century. He discovered what he called orgone energy — a measurable life force that exists in the atmosphere, in living tissue, and in water. He built devices called orgone accumulators that concentrated this energy and directed it into the human body. His patients reported accelerated wound healing, reduction of tumors, relief from chronic pain, and reversal of conditions that conventional medicine had declared untreatable. In 1954, the FDA filed an injunction against him. Not because his devices were dangerous. Because he refused to appear in court to "prove" that orgone energy existed. Reich argued that a court of law was not qualified to judge scientific discoveries. He refused to submit his research to a legal system he believed was controlled by the pharmaceutical industry. The court ruled against him in absentia. The FDA was given authority to destroy everything. Federal agents entered his laboratory in Rangeley, Maine. They dismantled every orgone accumulator.
