This is a 1937 photo from the lynching of Black men Robert McDaniels and Roosevelt Townes in Duck Hill, Mississippi. Accused of killing a white store owner, they were kidnapped from jail by a mob, chained to trees, and tortured with a blowtorch (causing the back burns). The image captures one during the ordeal before they were shot and burned alive. It was published in Time and Life magazines that year—the first such lynching photos in national press.
