@davidpattersonx I don't think that's true. Increasing intelligence will find new uses which we've not thought of. The current inability to see future use value of higher intelligence doesn't mean it's nonexistent; it might mean we are limited in our imagination.

AI is closer to the limit of intelligence than most people think. At the current rate of improvement, AI will become perfect at everything by 2028 or 2029. Beyond that point, it won't matter whether AI becomes more intelligent, because it won't become any more useful.

@SamBuntz Maybe less Christian than gnostic, as in we share the light of creation and can express it through our work. The violin in Stella Maris or the stone trough in No Country or the compass in The Road all reflect the light of creation passing through human design.

This seems totally wrong. Look at the conclusion of The Road. The father and the son are “carrying the fire,” maintaining the human spirit in a world that’s completely crumbled. And, in the end, the spirit does endure - the boy winds up with a good family.

@SamBuntz Or another way to see it is that the belief itself is the point, and if the boy spreads it to the new family he is sharing the light. It's not Christian transcendence but rather human expression and hope. I think McCarthy's meaning is ambiguous by design.

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.
