If this gymkhana club case went to Delhi HC/SC, more than half of the judges will have to recuse from hearing it given their/relatives connection/membership with the same!! A club: of the elites, for the elites, & by the elites!!

PTI INFOGRAPHICS | Centre asks elite Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over premises by June 5, cites security reason The Delhi Gymkhana Club, where the city's powerful and elite rubbed shoulders for nearly a century, stared at possible closure on May 23, with the Centre asking it to return its expansive 27.3 acres by June 5 on grounds of "securing defence infrastructure". The sprawling premises, situated at 2, Safdarjung Road, in the heart of leafy Lutyens' Delhi, were leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd (now known as Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd) for maintaining a social and sporting club. It stands adjacent to the prime minister's residence on Lok Kalyan Marg on one of the city's most valuable and strategically important land parcels, within the high-security administrative zone that also houses several key central government and defence establishments. An order, issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) under the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on Friday, stated that the premises are critically required for the strengthening and securing of defence infrastructure and other vital public security purposes. The government's move drew criticism from various quarters. "Till now, it was the poor who were being affected, so the rich were not too bothered. Then came the turn of shopkeepers, so salaried professionals did not feel affected. Now it is the turn of senior officers and professionals who visit clubs. Everyone's turn will come eventually," AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said. Madras Gymkhana Club president Capt S Seshadri said that it was a sad thing to happen to an institution of such stature. "I am not going to say it's fair or not fair. It's beyond my capacity to say that. But I feel sad," he said. Many members of the Delhi Gymkhana Club said that the order came as a "shock" to them, and they would challenge it in court. READ: ptinews.com/story/national…

#WATCH | Delhi: Centre asked Delhi Gymkhana Club to hand over premises by June 5, citing public purpose, defence infrastructure and national security considerations. Riya Sachthey, Advocate and Member of Delhi Gymkhana Club, says, "I have been a third-generation member of the Delhi Gymkhana Club. I was pretty appalled when I saw this notice. But when I read through the notice, the legal language clearly states that in the same deed, re-entry is allowed. But re-entry, a layman will not understand what re entry for what? So when you read the lease deed, you will notice that re-entry is only for public use. If this land is to be taken by the government for public use, in public interest, manning the security of our country, if there was some sort of an issue like that, it's okay, I'm fine...The staff over there should be adjusted somewhere so that they don't lose their livelihood. Me being a member, third-generation member, I feel that there should be some sort of an alternate institution which might not be as historical as this. We all can, you know, go there and make it like that. There should be some sort of alternative that we can also go and visit. I'm sure there's something good for the nation, in the interest of the citizens of the country, that such a step is being taken."

If a club is the last vestige of colonial India, what about the post of Governor?
Rahul Shivshankar@RShivshankar

DELHI GYMKHANA CLUB. THE LAST VESTIGE OF COLONIAL INDIA AND THE REDOUBT OF BABALOG (LUTYENS) PRIVILEGE, NEPOTISM IS NOW GOING TO BE CLAIMED BY THE CENTRE. Centre Moves to Take Back Delhi Gymkhana Club Land, Cites Defence and Public Security Needs In a significant move, the Central Government has ordered the re-entry and resumption of the Delhi Gymkhana Club premises located at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, stating that the land is required for urgent public and strategic purposes. The order was issued on May 22, 2026, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Land & Development Office (L&DO). The government stated that the property, spread across 27.3 acres, lies in a highly sensitive and strategic area of the national capital and is now needed for strengthening defence infrastructure, public security arrangements, governance infrastructure, and other public-interest projects. According to the communication, the premises had originally been leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., now known as Delhi Gymkhana Club Ltd., for the purpose of maintaining a social and sporting club. The Delhi Gymkhana Club is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in India. The club shifted to its present location in 1913 and was then known as the “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club”, with Spencer Harcourt Butler serving as its first President. After India attained Independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped and the institution came to be known simply as the Delhi Gymkhana Club. The club traces its origins to July 1913. In its early years, the Polo Club functioned as part of the Gymkhana Club before becoming a separate entity in the 1930s after shifting to New Delhi. Historical records relating to the club’s origins are limited, and systematic documentation of its history is understood to have begun only around 1927. Referring to Clause 4 of the lease deed, the Centre noted that the lessor has the authority to re-enter the premises if the land is required for a public purpose. Exercising those powers, the President of India, acting through the L&DO, has determined the lease and ordered immediate re-entry of the property. The order further states that the entire land parcel, along with all buildings, structures, lawns and fittings standing on it, shall vest absolutely with the President of India through the Land & Development Office. The Land & Development Office is scheduled to take over the premises on June 5, 2026. The Delhi Gymkhana Club has been directed to hand over peaceful possession of the property on the said date, failing which possession would be taken in accordance with law. The communication was signed by Deputy Land & Development Officer Suchit Goyal and issued with the approval of the competent authority.

Having covered Mumbai’s infrastructure for years, the recent Bandra East Garibnagar clearance feels less like a sudden victory and more like a stark reminder of a decades-old crisis. The first serious attempt to clear slums on govt land was back in the late nineties, when the BJP-Sena govt removed encroachments along the Harbour line tracks. As a reporter for the Times group, I actually travelled inside the train cabin with the motorman, thanks to Mukul Marwah, the then CPRO, to witness firsthand the horrifying operational challenges Central Railway faced daily. While the Garibnagar demolition is a welcome step, we cannot simply cheer the cleanup without exposing why it happened in the first place. For decades, a ruthless corporator-neta-babu nexus has made millions by exploiting these slumdwellers and weaponising public space. Even today, the Harbour Line remains a chaotic mess, airport lands are heavily choked, and prime government properties across the city stay aggressively encroached. This structural rot is the direct product of institutional civic corruption. Mumbaikars have not voted for seasonal clearance drives; they voted for an iron hand to smash this systemic betrayal. It is time to look past the bulldozers, expose the entire administrative cartel, and send them to jail. Mumbai needs visible consequences.

#BombayHC #Mumbai #JagranNews
