EDC has played the second wave of FA wisely (and not bc he is preserving future 6th/7th rd comp picks) He knows they won’t be able to fill all of the big 5 needs (C, TE, WR, OLB & DT) with year 1 rookie contributors unless the draft board falls perfectly So he is keeping Reader, Njoku, Hopkins & Clowney on ice so he can fill the positions that need help post-draft with high quality vets once he knows what positions they fortified with high round draft picks This is a sound strategy to build a complete contender with limited resources #RavensFlock

Louisville WR Chris Bell, who was widely considered a top-20 pick before suffering an ACL injury in November, is progressing ahead of schedule and is now running and jumping. Teams are intrigued by his unique skill set at 6’2.5”, 225 lbs, and in-game GPS tracked him at low 4.3 speed in full pads. Bell already has visits scheduled with 13 teams (and has completed four) and is expected to be fully cleared by training camp, and chance of being first-round pick is still real.

Physical failed is not just for 1 season but long term eval relative to compensation for player. Scans likely showed evidence of long term damage.

@SharpFootball Raiders have had another player sent back after trying to trade him to the packers. Failed physicals are either about risk for this season or long term risk. Thats why trades and contracts are pending physicals. Hey Warren got a great house for you to buy 10M, but No inspection.

not only did Brock Marion play all 16 games (100%) in 1997 after the Ravens failed him... he missed ONLY ONE game the next 8 seasons! he played 127 of 128 games the rest of his career and made 3 Pro Bowls along the way

Ravens have rescinded deals in the past because of issues with physicals. In 1997, Baltimore backed out of a deal with Cowboys safety Brock Marion minutes before he was going to sign a contract because the team discovered a potential problem with his left shoulder. In 2018, Baltimore voided its four-year, $29 million agreement with wide receiver Ryan Grant after he failed a physical over an ankle injury.

#RavensFlock: So to recap the last 26 hours, EDC got out of a bad trade, signed a better pure pass rusher for the same contract, got two first round picks back, kept their CB2 on the cheap, added a safety who is an upgrade over Gilman in every way, added a TE who knows the new OC’s system & consolidates 2 roster spots

In Dec, a reader alerted me that the Jaire Alexander trade does not appear on the Eagles' transaction page. It does on the Ravens' and the NFL's transaction pages. I asked the Eagles multiple times if that trade went through or was rescinded, and they declined comment. (cont.)

I presume Howie has not tried to recoup the pick traded for Jaire Alexander, as he values his word/reputation more than the pick (rightfully so). But given recent developments, he certainly has cover to petition the league for their pick bad and would lauded as a hero by peers.

Alright, let's try and sort this mess in one post. I think the most likely thing is that there is truth that 1) Baltimore was concerned the medical scans etc were worse than the Raiders either think or were letting on. But ALSO 2) that they probably only back out with Hendrickson available. Both parts of that seem reasonable on all sides tbh. Schefter reports they also consulted with the Cowboys doctor, which may explain Dallas not re-engaging. So the totality of the evidence does NOT suggest they were nefarious and only pulled out cos they got buyer's remorse. But equally, I doubt they bail on it without Hendrickson available to pivot to. Honestly just seems like an unfortunate situation all around that is going to happen every now and then with subjective medical evals. But feel free to condemn whoever we believe is 100% to blame for all of this based off incomplete info.

Back in 2004, Ravens backed out of a trade for 49ers' Terrell Owens, whose free agency plans were scuttled by a late fax Owens eventually landed with Eagles and got a new contract. The 49ers got a fifth-round pick and Brandon Whiting. The Ravens got back their second-round pick

I’ve changed my stance on Max Crosby. I believe the Ravens genuinely didn’t love the medicals and got cold feet because it was a lot of comp to give up with the red flags attached. It’s possible no one is “at fault” and that it’s just an unfortunate situation all around.

@BrianSuttererMD Aren’t physical recommendations based on a combo of health now and long term relative to cost of player? Like could a player pass a physical for a 1 yr contract for a 7th round pick and fail a physical for a 4yr contract for x2 first round picks and 120M. Like if knee arthritic?
