Never saw much use in the 308, either as a military or a sporting cartridge. It’s just a 300 Savage with a longer neck, only suitable for bullets up to 200 gr. Too slow with 150 to 180 gr bullets for long range, inferior in every way to the 30-06. “Gun Notes” (November 1968)

Before shifting to cattle I raised dairy goats. One evening 20 years ago I got home and the door to the house—closed when we left—was open. Uh-oh. Inside, 17 baby goats were sleeping in a pile on the couch. A doe was standing in the bathtub eating a bar of soap. Four more were standing on the kitchen cabinets. They’d opened the cabinets and spread most everything edible around the house. Boxes of cereal. Bread. A dozen more were wandering the house. They let in two pigs who found a half-gallon jar of honey, opened it and spread it all over the floor. Footprints of honey are still there to this day. The whole place was about an inch deep in droppings. My girlfriend at the time cleaned with me silently and then moved out the next day. She moved 5000 miles away. Never saw her again.

Dave bought Keith at the Exeter autumn sale in 2024. He nearly didn't. Keith was in a pen of five Anglo-Nubian billies, all healthy, all well-grown, and Dave had been looking for a browser for the east ditch problem for two months. He'd narrowed it to two of the five. Then the auctioneer's assistant opened the pen gate briefly to move the animals to the ring. In the four seconds the gate was open, the billy at the back of the pen, not one of Dave's two, walked to the gate, studied the latch mechanism from a distance of about eight inches, reached forward, and put his nose on it. The assistant closed the gate. The billy looked at where the latch had been. Then he looked at the ring. Then he looked back at the latch. Dave changed his mind. He mentioned this to the farmer from Crediton who was selling. The farmer from Crediton looked at Dave with the expression of a man about to say something important. "He opened the last four," the Crediton farmer said. "Every gate I had. I've just had the yard re-latched. He did the house gate in May." Dave: "The house gate?" Crediton farmer: "He was in the kitchen. He didn't eat anything. He just stood there." Dave looked at Keith. Keith was studying the gate latch again. Dave bought him. Keith has been on Dave's farm for fourteen months. Keith has opened every gate on the farm. The east ditch is clear. Dave's net outcome column has a tick on every row since entry 17. The kitchen, so far, has not been breached. Dave has checked the kitchen latch. Dave checks the kitchen latch every morning. Dave checks it twice.

@BuffaloByGodDan I tried bare root redbud up in zone 4B. They’re not liking it but shockingly they haven’t died. They’re 9 years old and still about three feet tall.

Just got back from my Vermont town meeting and boy was it a party for the fried, very elderly hippies. Land acknowledgements, random statements about making our town of a few goats, cows, and more chickens than people a sanctuary town that won’t comply with ICE. One hour discussion about the emerald ash borer creating road hazards. Someone wanted $30k for that. Lots of talk about hiring an indigenous ethno-botanist. An elderly NY transplant who looked like Larry David if he smoked an 1/8th to the dome every day was dropping unrelated current thing speeches before every vote. It will end up being record turnout for the Australian ballot to smack down back-door zoning and vote out one of the selectboard members. The low propensity woodchucks were rolling in and out en masse. The natives are furious with the direction of the town. And rightfully so! A 10/10 experience as usual.

One thing you notice when you read pretty much anything written more than 100 years ago is just how impoverished and bland and limited our language has become. People spoke and wrote in a kind of effortlessly rich and descriptive way that almost no one does today. On this site a lot of people write almost exclusively in cliches and internet lingo. A lot of people speak like that too. The language contracts, our conversational vocabulary shrinks more and more over time. And the more limited we become in our language, the more limited we are in our thinking.

@iowahawkblog Absolutely LOVE when this guy pops up in my feed. He’s observant and his affect of dumbfounded awe is comedic genius. The French tend to be stuffy. That’s what made Peter Sellers’ impersonation of the French so hilarious. This dude is a gem. Glad Texas has him.

@eskertrailfarms Let it weather. I would argue so long as it can dry there’s no appreciable gain in lifespan with the stain.

@JustBrowsingan @BowTiedBroke Use wood. The Trex-style products have huge expansion and contraction in places with real winter. It’s garbage.

Added a little more deck to the deck we finished back in July. Moved hot tub to the new lower portion with no railing. Wide open views of Smoky mtn range. Releasing link to visit here soon. If you were vacationing here, would you prefer a swinging bed or sauna behind hot tub?

The Hillbilly Legacy Project has begun. No clue what I’m doing as this is my first MAJOR land project..but, I’m sinking $5-$10 mil of my own cash into this. No outside investors, no banks, nothing. Belly up or to the moon, it will be me with the sleepless nights. Enjoy the ride.

@jerrythornton My knowledge of figure skating is pretty much limited to Nancy and Tonya. But even I know that was electric, smooth as butter, totally in the zone. She is the HERO of these games. USA!!!

@RealCalebKitson It’s been many years but I have a traditional western gun belt from them for a Super Blackhawk, tanker holster for a Python, and a few others. Prices seem to have gone up like everything else, but El Paso will fit like a glove, you’ll love it, and it will outlast you.

Do you realize that if you had 1 cow, 1 bull, 10 goats, a half acre of potatoes, a .22 long rifle with 2,000 rounds, a couple fishing poles and plenty of hooks, a saw, a wood burning cookstove, and water without electricity, your family could potentially not starve to death?
