SEO and AEO aren’t rivals. They’re a power couple. One gets you discovered. The other gets you recommended. I call it Decision-First SEO. The bridge that turns clicks into confident buyer decisions. Traditional SEO still builds the foundation. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) amplifies trust and recommendations across AI summaries, Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, and Google’s AI Overviews. Together? They win. If you’re a SaaS founder tired of traffic that doesn’t convert, this is the shift worth paying attention to. Save this. Share it with your team. Different superpowers. One mission: Help users make smarter decisions.

@bree_sharp That’s such a good way to frame the disconnect. Teams optimize heavily for discoverability, only to wonder why decision friction persists downstream.

@RankWithShel Root issue: SEO rewards informational intent. But the pages that close deals need specificity, social proof, and "why you over anyone else" — signals that don't help informational rankings. So teams optimize for one and quietly under-serve the other.

A surprising amount of SEO friction comes from trying to solve late-stage buyer uncertainty with top-of-funnel content. That mismatch quietly kills conversions.

@RankWithShel Worth flagging: structural clarity becomes load-bearing for AI citation. Classic SEO could survive thin structure if links were strong. For AI features, the model needs to understand what the page is *about* to surface it. Same foundation — tighter tolerance for ambiguity.

Google’s new AI optimization guidance basically reinforces something important: AI visibility doesn’t replace SEO foundations. It builds on top of them. Structure, clarity, topical relationships, trust, crawlability, and useful content still appear to underpin both search and AI visibility systems. That’s exactly why I made this graphic. developers.google.com/search/docs/ap…

Some SEO strategies still treat evaluation pages like optional extras. I think that made more sense when search was mostly about retrieving information. Now? Buyers need clearer validation paths because the information itself is increasingly commoditized.

The SEO industry is full of scammers selling dreams they know they can't deliver. "We'll get you to #1 in 3 months guaranteed." "Our system works on any site." "Just sign this 12-month contract and watch the magic happen." They know it won't work. They just need you locked in long enough to collect retainers before you realise. Too many agencies are selling hope, not results. They survive on new client acquisition, not retention. Because keeping clients would require actually delivering. If your agency promised results they haven't delivered in 6+ months, they're not having bad luck. They sold you something they couldn't do. Stop giving agencies the benefit of the doubt when they miss their own promises.

Everyone sees me as an SEO.. But my most valuable skill has always been sales. A decade ago I just realized SEO was the best way to do organic sales. Because its the best return on investment and time. 🤷‍♂️

Without SEO, there is no GEO. Take away SEO fundamentals from “GEO”, there is no “GEO”. AEO targets answer engines… through SEO. Comments welcome.

Interesting early pattern: Some of the queries bringing AI citations aren’t the broad informational ones. They’re the searches where the user is trying to evaluate an approach or validate a strategy before acting. Feels like a subtle but important shift.

Passing your goals isn’t all about effort. It’s about how the work is set up. ► Right info, in the right place. ► Put the tasks in the right order. ► Remove obstacles at every step. The output follows. Every time.

Stop asking "how do I get more traffic?" Start asking "why aren't the right people converting?" Traffic is a vanity metric. Pipeline is a business metric. Fix the funnel before you fill it.

Sometimes when founders say “SEO isn’t converting,” what they actually mean is: “We built acquisition paths without building evaluation paths.” Those are different problems, and they usually need different pages.

One thing I keep noticing: SaaS sites publish “best tools” and comparison pages strictly for search volume. But the page itself doesn’t help someone evaluate anything. No context. No tradeoffs. No guidance around fit. Just affiliate-table energy in a blazer.

Interesting thing I’m noticing while building out Decision-First content: Evaluation & comparison pages seem to create stronger topical association than informational posts alone. Not necessarily more traffic yet, but clearer query relationships and tighter thematic alignment.
