@dyingempires Macro level, politicians saw war coming, Tactical level Pearl Harbour was a surprise. Similarly Chamberlain and others hoped appeasement might work (and public opinion was behind it up until Czechoslovakia). But in both cases governments were doing what they could to prepare

The popular narratives of the Pearl Harbour surprise attack and European "appeasement" have obscured the extent to which the major powers, not only the Axis, were preparing for war years before the fighting started. The Pacific fleet was relocated to Pearl in 1940 as a deliberate threat to Japan.
Zack Stentz@MuseZack

I'm reading about the Two Ocean Navy Act of 1940 & how the fleet needed to defeat Germany & Japan was already under construction when Pearl Harbor happened & from today's perspective it's impossible to imagine America's political establishment being that strategic & prescient.

Every time I think about Gary Stephenson’s claim to have run Citibank’s most profitable book *globally* in 2011 at a mere $35m I goggle. They would had to have been doing very badly indeed for that to have been their most profitable book but they weren’t. It’s simply improbable.

@Proper_Memes Gary's not actually wrong though. Because the other guy fails to mention that trusts are full of assets that appreciate at 6-7% per year and get taxed at 0.6% for 125 years, compared to the 40% hit normal people pay. So there's a huge financial advantage.

This confirms my belief that people with buy to let investments do so because they are too stupid to invest in anything else. You have a tenanted property and with the way the rental market is going, you will still be able to raise the rent annually. Continuous, steady, increasing income on an asset that will more than likely appreciate long term. And tax free. But no, instead you’re going to sell. During a time of huge financial instability, where the housing market isn’t particularly strong, nor fast. And of course, if everyone is doing it, the market is further saturated. Then you eventually sell. You’ve paid all the associated taxes and fees. And paid off the mortgage. Then what? What are you doing with that money that’s going to make you more money than it already was. You aren’t, because we’ve already established you’re too stupid for other investments. This is proper toys out of the pram stuff.
Bullard@spennybig

I own an estate agency in hertfordshire, about 14 percent of our landlords have or are selling due to the negative tax and legislative environment. Assuming thats replicated nationally there will be 1.7million less properties for renters in a year, with no plan on replacement

In 1974, D&D came out. I played it with my friends, and after a while other roleplaying games came out - Empire of the Petal Throne, Traveller, Chivalry & Sorcery, The Fantasy Trip, Boot Hill, and so forth. Typically we'd try out the new kid on the block and so for a few months we'd be playing about 50-50 D&D and the new game. After a while the new game slipped away, and we were back to D&D. In 1978, RuneQuest appeared, and of course we wanted to try it, too. So again, at first we were doing D&D & RQ 50-50, but after a few months, we were ONLY playing RQ, and I never really went back to D&D except the occasional pick-up game. Why? Well I'd like to talk about two reasons RuneQuest was better for roleplaying than D&D. And trust me, NONE of the reasons I'm going to mention are because it's more "realistic" or because it has a "better world". Any nitpicking about "realism" will lead to endless back-and-forths. And obviously someone can (theoretically) create a D&D world as good as Glorantha, given time. Heck, before RuneQuest came out, I was running D&D on a map of Glorantha (from a Chaosium board game), so I know it can be done. 1/3

@codetalkio You do realise Denmark doesn’t actually have a minimum wage? Its collective bargaining so varies. And whenever I am there it’s more expensive than the UK, guess I use the wrong coffee shops….

Dumbass take, we have higher minimum wage in Denmark, comparable price for coffee, and manage just fine here If you cannot figure out how to run your business while paying a livable wage, then you should go back to business school again These takes are so self serving
Peter McCormack 🏴‍☠️🇬🇧🇮🇪@PeterMcCormack

A minimum wage of £15 would end my coffee shop, it would have to close, as would many other businesses. I’ll explain for the economically illiterate. Staff costs are currently half our costs, a £15 minimum wage is actually more than £15 an hour for the company, because you have to add: - 12.07% holiday - Sick pay - Maternity pay if and when required - National insurance - Pension contributions These costs would mean the shop loses money because remember, energy costs are up, rates are up, regulations are up. Now you can pass these costs onto the consumer - that would mean charging a lot more for coffee, people won’t pay it. The likes of Starbucks and Costa can, because they have economies of scale. The independent doesn’t. Now the little socialist will say well this is your fault, if you can’t run a business that can afford to pay its staff properly, but the little socialist has never run a business and does not understand the dynamics. Now I could pay some staff off and fill those hours myself or reduce us to one staff member during certain periods - but this proves the point that a minimum wage costs jobs. There was a time when these jobs were done by kids, perhaps on the weekend, paid a lower wage, no holiday and no silly employment rights. Perhaps they were even paid cash. The dynamic worked and small businesses like this could operate. It was also a great first job. Sadly now it isn’t worth employing entitlement youngsters at this level of pay. So alas, I don’t need the stress, the business would close, a number of jobs would be lost. Economics is about understanding these dynamics, no vibes. The cost of living is not solved through passing on inflation to the business, it is solved by ending high inflation and creating prosperity. This is what socialists don’t understand, they can’t create prosperity, they can only destroy it.

There are few buildings more impressive than the Milan Cathedral: - It's the largest church in Italy - It took 579 years to construct - Napoleon was crowned king here in 1805 - It houses 3,400 statues, more than any other church in the world. How can it get better than this?

Wrong. The single most significant event since Christ has been the American Revolution. We are by no means a perfect country. But the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence were radical for their time and still are today.

Green Party say they plan to ensure everyone has a minimum wage of £31,000pa. I run a business. I don’t earn that. I employ 2 people. They don’t earn that. The business I run doesn’t take in enough to pay that. I’d need to charge customers way more to afford that 🤷‍♂️. Or go bust.

If a change in the geographic deployment of U.S. troops is to take place, it should include a significant increase in presence in Poland, where American forces are most effective in terms of deterrence. Every contingent withdrawn from European countries should, at least in part, be redirected to the eastern flank.
Stanisław Żaryn@StZaryn

❗️⚠️The withdrawal of American troops from Europe is a risky decision that could trigger a serious security crisis. This move will likely be interpreted as clear evidence that political tensions within NATO are weakening Europe’s defensive capabilities. It also significantly reduces the ability of U.S. forces to conduct rapid and effective operations on the continent. All of this makes Russian attacks on NATO more probable. For the Kremlin, it represents a clear window of opportunity. If a change in the geographic deployment of U.S. troops is to take place — and the United States has been signaling this need for a long time — it should include a significant increase in presence in Poland, where American forces are most effective in terms of deterrence. Every contingent withdrawn from European countries should, at least in part, be redirected to a country on the eastern flank. This would mean fewer soldiers in Europe overall, but more where they are most needed. Defensive potential must be strengthened precisely in our region. There are many indications that the battle for the credibility and security of the Alliance will be decided on the eastern flank. @NATO @markrutte @USWPColby @wojcikrp @20committee @andrewmichta @Roger_Moorhouse @general_ben @georgewbarros

Eight years ago in Syria, Master Sergeant Jonathan Dunbar of Delta Force was killed in an accidental breaching charge explosion, alongside 22 SAS operator Matt Tonroe. Operators from Delta Force A Squadron and 7 (Air) Troop, B Squadron, 22 SAS, had been assigned to execute a direct-action raid on a known ISIS target in the Manbij Province area. As the assault force reached the objective and dismounted their vehicles, they immediately pushed forward. Master Sergeant Dunbar, the team’s breacher, and Sergeant Matt Tonroe were at the front of the formation. While Dunbar was positioning a breaching charge on the entrance, he inadvertently triggered an enemy IED. This set off a secondary detonation of the charges he was carrying. The dual explosions killed both men instantly and wounded five other members of the assault force. Both are deeply missed by their families, friends, and brothers-in-arms. Not forgotten.
