@exQUIZitely Thanks for reminding me of this! I used to love this game....
English

One of the best early 80s games ever is Choplifter, from 1982, developed in a solo effort by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund. It also became one of the best selling games ever for the Apple II.
The game simulated "realistic" helicopter flight with inertia, gravity, lift, drag, and momentum, resulting in the chopper feeling "sloppy and unstable" like a real one, yet remained playable after Broderbund helped tune it down from an overly realistic (and probably too frustrating) simulator. For 1982 standards this was very innovative.
My earliest memory of this was at a friend's house; he had a C64 on which we played it into dust. It was literally the only game we played for months.
We had a handrittwen "Highscore" list that we updated after each session, signed by all players present when we played it (yes, very nerdy). One simple rule was that highscores only counted when at least one other person was present and signed it off. I wished that list didn't get lost in time.
Early 80s gaming included so many things that don't exist anymore today... handwritten high score lists, drawn dungeon maps, the coastal line for Pirates, level codes...

OpenAI shutting down Sora is the most predictable outcome of misunderstanding consumer behavior.
Everyone grossly overestimates how creative people want to be.
99% of humans simply want to scroll and zone out instead of spending energy conceptualizing, editing, and creating videos.
No matter how much the barrier to creation is lowered by a single prompt. It still takes effort and a fair amount of creative thinking.
Even Instagram has 2 billion users. But hardly ~10 million (or 0.5%) would be serious creators.
So any AI consumer app betting on "with [new_app], everyone becomes a creator!" is being delusional and will go down the same way.
After all the word "consumer" exists for a reason. They consume. They don't produce (or even want to lol)

@GodlyAction Jesus says you can't be gay....where, exactly? Oh wait, he never mentioned it.

Project Hail Mary review:
1: Best movie I've seen in quite some time
2: I wish I vibed with the Rocky/Grace humor more. I've not read the book since 2021 but from what I remember, I felt like the bulk of the comedic lines were between Grace and Stratt, not Grace and Rocky. Grace and Rocky had a more serious friendship in the book. Movie rocky feels like he is teetering on the edge of Big Bang Theory humor at times.
3: I was bummed we didn't get to watch them nuke antarctica
4: Them leaving out relativistic explanations for Grace not aging and Rocky having extra fuel was frustrating.

@HakataQueen I used to translate subtitles for anime professionally (Viz). Most people don't realize that you get very few letters on screen to work with in subtitles. They will always be less accurate than dubs.
English

Once you actually speak Japanese you realize most translations are actually alright, you just nitpick because you don’t know enough nuance and translate every words literally
♥️♠️Nepsuka♦️♣️@Nepsuka
Once you learn a little bit of Japanese you realize a lot of official subtitles is not translated correctly.

@j3lqingt0n My kids went to Japanese elementary school. The whole community was proud of how good the food was.
English

@juliancpfister @IAmTheOGLegion @aaminahinfilm Such a great movie with such an awful final 30-40 minutes. What were they thinking.
English

@IAmTheOGLegion @aaminahinfilm It is not awful, but it’s entirely appropriately rated. It falls apart in the final act, devolving into a disappointingly typical monster movie.
English

@TokyoOnTheRocks @esjesjesj Most of the reviews I watched of it didn't focus on cultural aspects much, just the incredibly bad writing. I will miss those reviews!
(From a fellow long-time Japan expat)
English

@esjesjesj Most of the people who “didnt like the show” in the same breath will admit they didnt watch it. Their arguments are all culture war based. The show is hopeful for the future, but just as with MAGA they have no interest in that. Because they want to return us to the 1950-60s.
English

What’s crazy is this show captured the spirit of Star Trek more than any other of the new series. It was the first one to be legitimately hopeful for the future.

EXCLUSIVE: “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will end with its upcoming second season. The show failed to find a significant audience, not ranking on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming viewership charts at any point during its 10-episode first season. wp.me/pc8uak-1lH3kQ
English

@TokyoOnTheRocks @esjesjesj When I saw the scene where they all demonstrate their growing maturity and team spirit by....making their beds...I decided I didn't need to watch it to have an opinion.

@ScapismAdvocate @AI_EmeraldApple Here's a hard proven number: $3.6 Billion is what Sony paid for Bungie, which has produced only Marathon and a couple Destiny expansions in four years. Think this is making their money back ?
English

@AI_EmeraldApple LOOOOOL
PROVE that that "250M budget" is even real numbers.
Othewise this is all pure COPE + CAP.
If you gonna cite numbers... BACK THEM UP.
English

Marathon's new update disappoints as they record another new record low of only 15.5k players during off-peak hours.
Against a $250 million development budget with ongoing costs, this is not looking good for this game, as a lot of players complain that it's not different enough from Tarkov to give it an identity other than the art style, with the core gameplay loop being too similar.

English

@DavidLeavitt @JollyFoxtrotSix Yes, and that show turned out to be for very few people. Economics matters.
English

@JollyFoxtrotSix Not everything is for everyone but The name of the show is Academy of course it’s going to have a school focus just like they did with The Boys in Gen V
English

@OliverJia1014 I've lived in Japan 30 years. Totally fluent. High-paid interpreter and translator for most of that time. If I crack open my kids' manga, it's all just gibberish to me lol. Nihongo is highly segmented, much more so than English.
English

How do you think I’ve been able to live in Japan without basic literacy skills?
I read plenty, but not everyone regularly reads visual novels and encounters that kind of grammar in their daily life here.
Why do people studying Japanese insist on being this petty?
暇ニンゲン@himaningen45
Dude you really don't need to flex more about how illiterate you are. 'I live in Japan, have a job, have a wife but have never read a novel' isn't exactly the flex you think it is
English

@darrell1118 @KateFantom @BenGrahamUK Lots of things can be true at once:
*World has seen rapid climate shifts unrelated to CO2 or humans
*Current climate is *colder* than Earth average
*Manmade climate change is real
*Lots of species thrive in a warm climate
*Maybe not humans lol
*But, nature will shrug it off
English

@RayBow780271 @KateFantom @BenGrahamUK This - it does prove that events such as melting ice sheets can affect the ocean currents and climate change. So it's important to understand the event. But it does not challenge our current understanding of increased CO2 in the atmosphere now - but it helps us predict/understand
English

@FlagstaffJay @KateFantom @BenGrahamUK It was end of a mini-ice age, if I recall correctly. I think cataclysmic event is more like a meteor, or volcanoes, or Godzilla, but I guess definitions could vary.
English

@RayBow780271 @KateFantom @BenGrahamUK Wasnt that when the glaciers covering the midwestern US and Canada finally all broke loose? I guess at best that’s a working theory, but it would certainly be a cataclysmic event
English

@JillBelch @BenGrahamUK (Of course that doesn't disprove anthropogenic change currently)
English

@JillBelch @BenGrahamUK Nope. 10C increase over a few years just about 11,000 years ago. Look up Younger Dryas termination.
English

@SaGa_NeilB I totally experienced this. Was so curious about all these aspects of Japan, until I got fluent and realized it was all boring BS. Of course, same would be true about any other country as well. Humans are just basically dull and boring :)
English

@Bega092205 Lived in Japan 30 years. Totally fluent. The only words I can't catch in conversation are katakana
English

@YorchTorchGames You forgot to mention that Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 Billion, and the only new thing they produced is Marathon, so the game essentially cost four billion dollars to create.
