Killing or injuring healthcare workers, bombing hospitals, targeting ambulances, isn’t just a "war consequence"; it’s a collapse of humanity. Under international humanitarian law, patients and humanitarian workers are protected along with the hospitals they work in and the ambulances they rely on.

Civilians must be protected and respected, always. Parties to conflicts are the only ones with enough power to enforce the rules of war, transform them into reality, and save lives.

When civilians are displaced, they don’t just lose a roof over their heads: they lose safety, stability, and the daily life they once knew. Civilians must always be protected, without excuses.

Today, we have launched the World Disasters Report 2026. Producing a report on harmful information is not easy. It means addressing a complex and highly sensitive topic. So why do it now? Because every day, harmful information is blocking humanitarian action, eroding trust, and putting lives directly at risk. This report makes one thing clear: harmful information is no longer just a communications challenge. It is a humanitarian risk as real as a collapsed bridge or a guarded checkpoint. In some cases, it is a hazard in its own right. Our @IFRC network listens to communities, works with verified data, and grounds its analysis in real-world experience. We are “local, everywhere” and today, that must include the digital space as much as the physical one. We can either stand by as harmful information erodes the trust it has taken a century to build. Or we can choose to make credible, trusted information our most powerful tool. Harmful information is poison, but being the source of trusted, actionable information - that is power. This report demonstrates that, and has some solid ideas to harness that power. 👉ifrc.org/document/world… #WDR2026

Humanitarian pauses, corridors, ceasefires... whatever the term, warring parties must protect civilians and humanitarian workers. @CDroegeICRC, our chief legal officer, explains👇🏻

🎒 Students are civilians. ✏️ Teachers are too. 🏫 Schools are civilian buildings. All of them are protected by the rules of war. Even when schools are used for military purposes, international humanitarian law (IHL) still requires armed actors to take all feasible precautions prior to attack, to avoid or minimize incidental harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure. Even wars have limits. Always.

We continue to follow closely the rapid and concerning developments in the Middle East. The @IFRC is working with the affected National Societies to support a timely humanitarian response as needs rise. We have immediately activated our Disaster Response Emergency Fund @IFRC_DREF to support the response in Iran. Across the region, teams from our IFRC network are already on the ground, providing urgent medical care, transporting the wounded, and supporting emergency health services as needs grow. Important to preserve humanitarian space so humanitarian and medical personnel can operate safely and reach people in need.

When temperatures drop, warmth is no longer about comfort; it’s about survival. In armed conflict zones, even a single degree can determine whether people cope or collapse. Humanitarian aid must reach civilians wherever they are, especially those in need.

When humanitarian workers and volunteers are not protected, the people we serve are the ones who suffer the most. Violence against humanitarians must stop.

On this last day of the year, we express our gratitude to our Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff around the world for changing the lives of millions of people every single day, providing care and assistance. We also honor those who are no longer with us. The @IFRC network is always there, Local. Everywhere. In 2026, that isn't going to change. The 17 million volunteers of our National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies live within the communities they serve. In 2026, we're going to get even better at supporting them. Thank you for keeping humanity alive. Together, let's continue bringing hope to people's lives.

📍 Gaza | Earlier this month, we delivered infection prevention supplies to Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza. Wards are full, resources are limited, and needs far exceed support—continued assistance is vital to keep lifesaving care running.

If 2025 has felt relentless, you’re not alone. This has been a year that demanded more from our IFRC network than any in recent memory. One of the hardest realities I have faced has been the continuing, and still unacceptable loss of our colleagues. Despite all the headwinds, I am so proud of all you helped deliver in 2025. From responses to the earthquake in Myanmar and Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean, from community-based surveillance that helped end an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to our approach to the complex situation in Syria and our collective response to heatwaves in Europe, people’s lives have been saved and improved through your work. Thank you for your resilience and your commitment in 2025. As we prepare to welcome 2026, I hope it will be a year unprecedented in only positive ways. Together, let’s continue to save lives, change minds, and to bring dignity.
