Despite several external shocks, intra-African agricultural trade tripled between 2003 and 2023. However, Africa remains heavily dependent on food imports from the rest of the world. Increasing intra-African trade can be a coping strategy for global crises and supply chain disruptions. Policies that prioritize regional self-sufficiency should be pursued more actively, particularly within the framework of the @AfCFTA. Which African countries hold the greatest untapped potential for AI in agrifood systems? Our 17th Annual Trends & Outlook Report (#ATOR) identifies Zambia, Niger & South Sudan as highest UPI scorers—strong foundations & acute needs, yet minimal current adoption. For several @_AfricanUnion Member States there is “room to act” through targeted investments in alignment with the #KampalaDeclaration's call for context-specific solutions. 17th ATOR insights: resakss.org/sites/default/…

Rice sits at the heart of Africa’s food security challenge and opportunity. Driven by population growth, rising incomes, and urbanization, demand is projected to surge over the coming decades. Africa already imports around 15 million tons of rice annually, accounting for roughly 40% of continental consumption. By 2033, imports are projected to rise by 56%, positioning Africa as the world’s largest rice-importing region and accounting for 40% of global rice imports. Reversing this trend will require a decisive productivity push: improving water-use efficiency, expanding irrigation, scaling adoption of drought-resistant varieties, and strengthening aggregation, processing, and milling capacity to boost competitiveness and reduce import dependence. The 17th Annual Trends and Outlook Report, “Moving the Technology Frontiers in African Agrifood Systems,” advances a systems perspective on innovation, emphasizing that the true technology frontier lies at the intersection of digital, biological, engineering, and ecological innovations with institutional reform, political learning, and accountable governance. From AI, digital agriculture, and biotechnology to mechanization, irrigation, value addition, and circular bio-based systems, the report demonstrates that Africa’s challenge is not a lack of promising technologies, but the need to adapt, govern, and scale them in ways that are inclusive, climate-resilient, and economically viable. #ATOR As countries advance implementation of the @_AfricanUnion Kampala CAADP Declaration, lessons from Latin America highlight a key policy insight: agricultural transformation requires coordinated reforms across technology, institutions & governance, not isolated projects. Ahead of the @UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2026, the 17th edition of the #ATOR provides evidence to guide system-wide transformation aligned with the #KampalaDeclaration & #Agenda2063. As we mark #internationalworkersday and reflect on working conditions and workers’ rights, our research on mechanization reminds us that gender and youth inclusion in mechanization is not merely a question of fairness, it is essential to unlocking the full transformative potential of agrifood systems. Examples from #Morocco and #Ethiopia show how skill development in mechanization can boost youth employability, support rural industrialization, and the growth of service economies. Africa still imports a large share of its fertilizers. This high dependence on imports, especially potash, creates vulnerability to supply‑chain disruptions during periods of conflict and amid trade restrictions imposed by key global exporters. Enhancing intra‑African trade could serve as an effective coping strategy to address external shocks and policy uncertainty. Correlation analysis in our #AATM2025 finds a positive relationship between fertilizer consumption, trade, and cereal yields. AATM: resakss.org/sites/default/…

Our latest ATOR documents agricultural water management technology cases across Africa. The analysis shows that technology adoption and impact are highly regionalized, with Eastern (47%) and Northern Africa (23%) leading in innovation uptake, while Central Africa (4%) remains underserved. The authors recommend regionally differentiated policies and investments led by RECs such as @SADC_News and @ceeac_eccas, with @AfDB_Group and @IFAD providing concessional finance aligned to regional needs. What would it take for African countries to fully reap the benefits of the @AfCFTA? Findings from the Africa Agriculture Trade Monitor (#AATM) suggest that boosting regional trade requires better coordination of policies at regional and continental levels, particularly those that link productivity gains to market development. This includes combining investments in irrigation, transport, and storage with regulatory reforms that reduce trade barriers and support agro‑processing. AATM insights: resakss.org/node/6930

How can #AI revolutionize Africa’s food systems? On the heels of the launch of our 17th Annual Trends and Outlook Report, @AKADEMIYA2063’s @dr_racineLy sat down with @panagrimedia’s Busani Bafana (@maboys) to weigh in. “It is often less about the individual technologies and more about the enabling environment that countries create through policy, investment, and capacity-building that determines feasibility.” Full piece: panagrimedia.com/how-ai-can-rev…
