I'll second that recommendation, but I'll also be honest and say that since I wasn't really frequenting berserk fan forums, whenever it got brought up online it was always the really edgy people talking about it. I caught TAL's Berserk Saga after my first time finishing the 97 anime and it was the first time I'd seen or heard anyone talk about Berserk with such reverence while actually getting into specifics.

So I started reading Berserk recently. I've deliberately avoided the franchise for close to a decade because I have never had a positive recommendation for it that didn't amount to 'omg man there's so much rape in it and that makes it so edgy and cool man it's like the most mature series ever omg I loved the latest chapter it had like 47 rapes per panel I feel so mature and edgy reading it uwaaugh~'.
Turns out that once again, the absolute worst part of a franchise is its fanbase. I'm not ready to give my detailed thoughts on it yet, but I will say that Kentaro Miura has one of the most interesting psychologies of any author I've encountered. His work reminds me of Made in Abyss in a lot of ways, but unlike Made in Abyss I don't get the sense that all the horror and sexual violence is something he actually jerks off to IRL.

It’s strange how often the loudest critics of government failure are also the ones arguing for expanding its reach, more money, more authority, and fewer constraints.
If an institution is mismanaging what it already takes, why would the solution be to trust it with even more?
Either it’s failing and needs limits, or it’s trustworthy and doesn’t. Trying to argue both at once just collapses under its own weight.

Not one single Berserk fan I've ever met has ever had a more nuanced take than 'yeah it's really cool and gory also people get raped alot here's three panels where people get raped lol so edgy eh?' when asked why they like it.
