This is the IMAX console we have here. Very old, but very reliable. You can see Odyssey is over 250k frames which includes the Dune 3 prologue. This works out to over 11 miles of film at around 630lbs.

@fishmatter Yeah, those old projectionists didn’t mess around. Some are still around and they’ve taught me a lot.

@RealJessePalmer That’s incredible. I saw all of these at the first imax theatre (the only one, for quite a while). The cinesphere. So I imagine maintenance was exceptional.

@pixalpixal I once had a request to rewind a 35mm sold out show because a woman had to go to the bathroom and missed like 5 minutes. People are incredible.

@RealJessePalmer It was very funny to hear other people shouting at the projection booth stuff like “pause the movie!” And “rewind it!”

@mdhardeman No. Palm pilot controls platters. Nothing else. No need to interact with it at all. It’s mostly a status indicator for us.

@RealJessePalmer Aren’t most of the reel shelf and projector head controls on (now emulated on iPad) palm pilot apps?

@pixalpixal Sorry you had to experience that. It really stinks when that happens. If the sync goes out there's no way to get it back again and the show is lost.

@fishmatter Not necessarily. I've heard of the docs running over 4,000 times without incident (and still looking clean!). It's actually pretty rare to have to add slug.

@RealJessePalmer Are you saying you have to cut slug into the print? That can’t possibly be right. I’ve seen countless imax films projected and I’ve never noticed slug. Many of these were old educational films which will have been projected many times - there will have had to have been cuts.

@pixalpixal Opry Mills? I had a buggy DTAC that did that during Oppenheimer. I had to replace the DTAC twice before it worked again.

@RealJessePalmer I was in a screening last year and the audio cut out about an hour into the film and restarted from the beginning. Picture was unaffected and they could not fix the issue.

@jeff70mm Dude, it's much simpler now. We've got it almost as automated as possible.

@RealJessePalmer If I remember correctly I was interlocking five or six devices at picture start. Had an 8-track reel to reel for pre show announcement with time code.

@IndustrialSaint I'd estimate about 40 feet of film. It's different for each location. Our platter is close to the projector. Metreon for example is about 15' away from the projector

@RealJessePalmer From the reel, through all the rollers,projects, out through the rollers and back to the "played" reel, how long is that distance?

I know all the rollers look confusing at first, but after awhile it becomes clear that there’s only 1 way to thread it

@jeff70mm Old school. I wish I got to use the old stuff before it was retired.

@RealJessePalmer I had an AE-1 for feature audio and 35mm dubber for trailers.

@jeff70mm @fishmatter That's a great record. I had a GT not know how to stop without tearing up sprocket holes. It was basically always performing an E-stop. The ultrasonic splices are great, but the splicers need regular maintenance or else they drift and can make weak welds.

@fishmatter @RealJessePalmer Only had to slug a print once, four frames, I think. In almost 20 years. An ultrasonic splice failed.

@jeff70mm That sounds right. I couldn't remember. I'm not sure if the SR has the same pulses or not. We've also retired the DTAC for the FPAC so it's all different now. No more replacing bad cards.

@RealJessePalmer My gt projector shaft encoder was 10 pulses per frame.

@Bitbat1 Took the new Opus 5 for a spin and it created a full working UI for me from photos of other screens, but it's not there yet. That plasma glow is essential.
