@shellenberger This is the US government’s official statement on it. It’s got nothing to do with the media or bipartisan politics. Whether you trust the government’s statement over independent whale researchers is a separate question. (Non-US here so don’t bother coming at me with politics)
This isn't a matter of opinion. This is the conclusion of the world's leading whale researchers and what the boat tracking data and sonar data both show.
The evidence is in this documentary, "Thrown To the Wind," below, with all supporting data and research here:

@Lewis_Brackpool I’m all for using pen, it’s quick, makes sense, not a burden, and gets rid of this issue.
But…
In what world would a person erase your vote when they could just throw it away? If they’re in a position to whip out the eraser, why couldn’t they just put a handful of fake votes in?
@VIRTUAL_TRIS@JaneBransby@russellquirk This is good in theory. But terrible in practicality simply because of the increased cost. It’ll probably cost more in organisation than is saved in current cost of misuse. What companies are too fancy? What products have too many features? How do those lists stay up to date?
@JaneBransby@russellquirk Indeed, many like my own needs.
But why does that need cash?
If it is paid direct then money will be spent on the right things for those with genuine need.
On benefits but ‘has to have the top Virgin TV package to entertain her child’.
Also racked with catalogue debt.
And grossly overweight.
This is what the taxpayer is funding to the tune of £300bn a year.
But no doubt the left will say she’s ’entitled’.
Britain needs to grow a spine and get a grip.

@ReaverCrypto@Clayspuda@DanielPriestley@peterrhague That trend line will take time to prove. Especially, won’t see the full effects in Britain as data will be skewed due to extremely rich people and some evaders of other countries stay here and live so even if mildly better off people leave UK due to these policies it won’t show
The private school policy brings out the worst in Labour supporters. The undisguised glee at being able to make life harder not for the super rich (school fees are pocket change to them) but for the middle class. The ones who have typically done better than them through hard work and talent, rather than being born into privilege. It’s a real mask off moment.
@BTC_will_win@DanielPriestley@peterrhague Ok, an excellent theoretical point. I’m a maths guy so this instantly makes sense to me. But do we have any evidence of where we are on the curve? Your point about millionaire migration implies we could be relatively far to the right, but doesn’t really prove that.
@ReaverCrypto@DanielPriestley@peterrhague Laffer curve is an interesting theory. Look at millionaire migration maps- UK is losing more millionaires (who pay a big % of gov revenue) than any other country. The rich either move or find a loophole…
It’s not about taxes - the current tax take is the highest it’s ever been.
It’s not about fairness - 1% already pay 30% of income taxes (while earning 14%).
Even when I explain to people that high taxes actually ends up reducing overall taxes collected, they don’t care. They’d rather the country be worse off if it means “punishing the rich”.
@FedorShabashev@Scienceseur@addyKapur@SNAFU_Sara@jonatanpallesen@TomChivers Nah. If acupuncture is actually something then there should be a difference between me (an untrained person) stabbing a guy with a needle and someone doing acupuncture. As a layman on the bed you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
@BDHorrigan@WalkRideGM@urban_splash@TomBloxhamMBE Why not both? The people in this comment section don’t run the building in question. They’re not able to get new bike racks installed. But they can offer advice on better technique to use the ones that are already there. The two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Trying to arrive by bike to a meeting at Beehive Mill, Ancoats.
Not everyone has the ability to lift their cycle off the ground.
@urban_splash@TomBloxhamMBE this is your building - what can be done to make cycle parking more accessible?
@WalkRideGM@dgrievo@urban_splash@TomBloxhamMBE Both sides of this can be true: It is possible to think that you could have benefited from some advice in technique (given you’re not using the suggested technique in the video) and also that more accessible bike storage would be preferable. You don’t have to fight everyone.
@SusanneReid68@KusariNinja@Bikery1966 Except the speed difference here would be up to 125mph (according to a quick google) and on the road it’s most likely to be about 10.
I’m a cyclist and agree with your point, but exaggerating it 10 times over tends to give the impression you’re being unreasonable.
Drivers, if your job requires you to hold a drivers licence it's not a good idea to close pass a cyclist running a camera in your employers vehicle. Notice of Intended Prosecution on it's way to the owner/driver of this bus.
I wonder what the rush was as it's not in service?
@deepanshu_s The police are sending a Notice of Intended Prosecution just like they did to this lot.
Close passing a cyclist running a camera will result in a £100 course or points and a fine.

@Bikery1966 As a cyclist, this looks perfectly safe and reasonable to me. If you’re in the cycle lane and they’re not then what’s the problem? Cars drive close to the curb too, but there’s no pedestrians advocating for driving in the middle of the road. I just don’t get it.
@kaceytron@Angelica_Reed1@Asmongold@ZackRawrr As someone who knows nothing about this guy apart from the discussion in this thread:
One of you (you) is just spouting pop psychology with no evidence, and the other has given a compelling argument that’s not been refuted.
Do better, refute her. Get quotes, stats, anything?
@Elliot_the_Woke@bristolgreen The irony of randomly targeting this person and indirectly complaining that they have an opinion. Who made you this dense?
@realulmapache@nickreeves9876 Maths not your strong suit? Using your own numbers, in 1980 you could just buy the house outright for the same wage ratio (just over double your salary) required for a 25% deposit now. (Using median income and median house prices then and now). Thats night and day.
@nickreeves9876 In 1980, the median home price was 47200...interest was around 18 percent...average annual income was around 21000. How the hell did we ever afford a home back then?
I'm a boomer. Collectively, my generation has absolutely screwed young people. We've taken them out of the EU against their will. We've robbed them of Freedom of Movement. We've given them unaffordable house prices, crippling rents, and massive student debts. Meanwhile, many of us benefit from generous final salary pensions, which the young will never have, and massive increases in house prices.
The EU has offered the young a tiny fragment of the Freedom of Movement removed by Brexit, and Sunak and Starmer have rejected it in order to appease a dwindling minority of ignorant, xenophobic boomers.
Ours is the worst generation. We would richly deserve it if the young decided to save money by sending us all to spend our last years in care homes in Nigeria.
@nsehgal26@jennystojkovic@realpungao The harm is opportunity cost: The reason processed foods exist is because they’re cheaper, easier to transport, easier to package, have longer shelf life, have custom (marketable) nutrient profiles and often use more plant based ingredients which are broadly more carbon efficient
@jennystojkovic@realpungao you are basically denying that we should eat only real food. if there isn't a benefit, there will be no harm in eating real foods
In the 1960’s people simply weren’t fat.
They managed to do this without:
-fancy watches to track their health
-juice cleanses
-expensive workout plans
-deliberately avoiding carbs
-keto, vegan, and other cultish diets
-tracking macros
Instead, they had one simple secret…👇
@GaetanPortal@jayrayner1@sainsburys What’s the complaint about self service checkouts? Genuine question. I wouldn’t go to a manned till unless it was completely free (which they generally aren’t). I mostly do basket sized shops, which are at least 4 or 5 times faster at self checkout.
@jayrayner1@sainsburys Please consider, they have made the shopping experience a nightmare with their insistence on self service checkouts in major stores. The staff hate it, the customers hate it, I am taking my custom elsewhere whenever possible.
For those currently listening to Simon Roberts, ceo of @sainsburys at the city food and drink lecture, talking about the way the company has protected consumers from inflation, the company made £690 million profit to Apr 2023
@charlie_baker23@honest_gardener@ianwalker It was very clearly lighthearted. If you’d benefit from an alternate opinion here.
Also I shower for like 20-30 minutes after I’ve been exercising, mostly treating it as relaxation and pensive time, the actual washing is like 20% of why I’m in the shower. I think that’s common!
