I try to stay out of world and national politics, but lately it seems everyone has suddenly become a war strategist and geopolitical scholar overnight. Social media is overflowing with loud opinions from people who have never set foot in the regions they’re dissecting and have no understanding of the historical, cultural, military, and economic complexities involved. If you are not deeply informed about the intricate realities of a country or an armed conflict, perhaps refrain from issuing definitive judgments about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have been blessed to travel to nearly 60% of the world, and I consider myself well-read — and even then, I keep my mouth closed on matters that require true expertise. Maybe we should go back to posting what we ate for dinner or commenting on topics we actually understand. The noise is exhausting.
