🚨NEW: A divide is forming in bank land over the yield compromise. Big banks with consumer facing arms are taking issue, while those without appear more comfortable with the final language. Some community banks are also signaling support, though @ICBA, which represents them in Washington, is voicing concerns. Following my conversation with a larger bank that shares the concerns of the trades, the core issue is that the language is drafted too narrowly and still leaves room for crypto firms to work around the restriction. In their view, it’s not a true compromise because it doesn’t eliminate yield completely, it just changes how it’s offered. The trades are planning to ramp up outreach to Senate Banking Committee members beyond just @SenThomTillis and @Sen_Alsobrooks ahead of a markup, I’m told. The Clarity Act is not a future priority; it is the priority. Every corner of the industry is operating under legal uncertainty that Congress has the power to fix. The Senate needs to act.

I should be stopped. I have been going round telling people, with a straight face, that they might want to consider eating the food their ancestors ate for two million years before someone built a factory and started extruding breakfast out of it. I have suggested that a cow stood in a field eight miles up the road might know more about feeding a human than a chemist who came up with a beige powder in 2003. I have noted that spinach is full of oxalates, almonds are full of phytic acid, soy is full of goitrogens, and beans are full of lectins. The plants spent four hundred million years coming up with chemical defences against being eaten. The cow consented by being a cow. I have mentioned that carbs are the only macronutrient with no minimum daily requirement. The body, given the chance, makes its own glucose out of protein and fat and runs perfectly well on the result. Apparently I should not have looked. Worse, I have suggested that taking the carbs out tips the body into ketosis, where the appetite quietly switches off and the brain runs on a fuel it actually prefers. No peptide. No Sunday injection. Just food, and the absence of sugar. I have suggested people might be afraid of the wrong fat. The butter is not the problem. The thing in a plastic tub, made from rapeseed in a factory in Hull, is the problem. This, apparently, is the dangerous bit. Me. With my mince. Suggesting butter. Stop me before I recommend an egg.

We need fewer barriers for small processors. We need more local meat options. We need real competition again. Break up the meat monopoly and let’s get back to relying on Americans to feed Americans.
