Finally, after more than 4 years of work, the main paper from my PhD thesis is out today in Nature Geoscience! We mapped the world’s largest tropical peatland, in the Congo Basin. A huge intact carbon store, BUT under direct threat from oil exploration nature.com/articles/s4156…

The work of @bartcrezee is incredibly valuable in mapping & quantifying the scope of peatland in the Congo Basin. We have 200+ people from around the globe building off this research & looking at alternatives to oil development. If you research & GIS skills, come say hi!

Upemba -- the largest block by far at 4.6M ha -- is bigger than Denmark and almost the size of Costa Rica. It includes the Upemba National Park, one of the most underfunded national parks in the world and a UNESCO Biodiversity Reserve.

Bloc 18 is in the southern part of the Cuvette Centrale, near Kasai. It's also about 2.5M ha in size. Bena Dibele is the largest town, on the banks of the Sankuru river. Most of this area is rainforest & tropical savannah.
