My grandparents used to call Urdu speakers immigrants from UP/Bihar, Hindustanis. For Punjabis of the previous generations, Hindustan was something different from Punjab.

India, Pakistan and Bangladesh obviously share some overlapping cultural commonalities but a bit of shared heritage does not equate to cultural uniformity. There are some similarities but just as many differences.
The subcontinent has always been a myriad of different regional, linguistic, ethnic and religious identities sitting at different points on a civilizational pole.
We aren't one people and nor have we ever been. A lot of this "South Asian" and "Desi" slop that enters modern discourse finds its roots in British colonial history or amnesia - as though subcontinental identity starts from this point.
I have close friends from the above three regions but despite a few similarities there's no misconception that we are all very much different communities. In fact if it weren't for British culture which we all share - the differences would be even more apparent.
The question should really be why are people so intent on erasing different regional identities? Can you only relate to people if you think they are similar to you?
