Rent Strike Bargain

@RentStrikeBarg

We are a movement of workers+tenants. We fight for tenant collective bargaining rights + help to seed new tenant unions across so-called BC.

As of today, landlords need to submit notices to end a tenancy for personal or caretaker use through the new web portal - if they don't, the notice is invalid. This new process protects tenants from bad faith evictions. StrongerBC.ca/Housing

Huge news. Province intros sro vacancy control. Could save 1500 Sro units from massive rent increases. Thanks to sro collaborative for their work on this. #vanpoli

NEW - Housing Minister @KahlonRav has introduced legislative changes which would allow the City of Vancouver to implement rent control specifically geared at single room occupancy buildings to prevent unscrupulous landlords from evicting tenants then jacking up the rent. #bcpoli

@dustbobgod How do you bargain without bargaining rights? What will knowing how much the landlord raised the rent do to make rents lower?

oh cool credit scores now ppl can go into debt to pay the $1k rent increase when they're bad-faith evicted and the $15 in legal aid allocated to their case runs up and the new landlord laughs for half an hour straight when they try to negotiate their rent

For the most part, the social housing system is designed for people that 'need help'. That undermines any dignity in that housing product. Alternatively, the 'market-rate' units are beyond the reach of any average wage-earner. The choice is non-existent.

In our housing market we continue to increase supply, but the portfolio of supply is underdiversified. We have market housing, and social housing for folks with complex needs. And nothing in between....

The missing component to the housing argument around supply-side and demand side solutions is... CHOICE! Supply and demand assumes that supply is diversified to match the various demands..

Surge Pricing is a lie... the companies have understaffed their workforce and induced demand by overpromising their service. If sales volumes increase, usually a company incentivizes customers with lower prices. Higher prices at higher volumes is just greed.

Wendy’s will start experimenting with surge pricing in 2025, along the lines of Uber and Lyft. Wendy’s will test “dynamic pricing” on burgers, Frosties, and other menu items, which will cost more during times of increased demand. gizmodo.com/wendys-wants-u…

@MorePerfectUS So... they're understaffed and slow but now we have to pay for their service deteriorating? This is the definition of failing up. This is supposed to be fast food, but they've destroyed their kitchen systems with mobile orders and now they get to charge more for it?

Another great article about how the City of Vancouver is letting Andrzej Kowalski destroy 7 affordable units and convert them into 4 expensive condos! Take action to stop these evictions at DefendEastVan.ca
Georgia Straight@georgiastraight

Another David VS. Goliath story is emerging from 1171-1177 East 14th Avenue. Inside, tenants of the multiplex’s seven rental units have found themselves battling a series of legal loopholes that could impact renters all over Vancouver. Read more: straight.com/city-culture/e…

To make this clear: the VPD lied to taxpayers about a spike in crime (which was actually declining) before an election. They stoked a moral panic and used their influence to endorse @Vote4ABC. Guess who then hired 100 cops and made the VPD the best paid force in Canada?

Can someone tell @bcndp that this plan has been field tested in metrotown last decade and it was disaster for tenants. Thousands of demovictions led to 2nd highest rents in Canada, then ouster of developer funded long time NDP Mayor. @rajchouhan @routledge_janet @KatrinaCBurnaby
Katie DeRosa@katiederosayyj

SFU’s @Ayan604 analyzed the BC NDP’s transit density plan and what he sees scares him. 50% of Metro households in the potential development areas are renters, raising fears a development push could lead to demovictions of renters in low-rise apartments. vancouversun.com/news/local-new…

Policy and market solutions have failed. The politicians and developers operate like a cartel and benefit from our misery. Renters need to organize and build fighting unions to bring down prices. Unions are the best force able to discipline a market and make it work for everyone
Habitat Waterloo Region@HabitatWR

Habitat for Humanity Canada has released the results of its annual national survey. According to survey findings, for the second year in a row, lack of housing affordability ranks as a top concern for Canadians alongside inflation and access to healthcare. ow.ly/rMfT50Q7XOL

No anti-displacement requirements, and not even any minimal public housing targets attached to this legislation. Buying upzoned land just to give it back to for-profit real estate interests is truly reckless and locks us into a future of #demovictions and sky-high rents. #BCPoli

While we are investing billions in transit infrastructure across B.C., outdated rules are slowing down the delivery of homes next to SkyTrain stations and major bus exchanges. Homes near transit and services that people rely on. Today, I introduced a Bill to fix this. 🧵 [1/4]
