It’s about time DHS has been funded and reopened. Let’s be clear: these shutdowns disrupted Americans’ travel and hurt the hardworking men and women at FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and other agencies within DHS. This exact deal was negotiated months ago, it’s unacceptable that it took this long to get a vote.

Amid everything else happening this week, out-of-touch politicians in Washington chose to spend time voting on protecting the inhumane practice of greyhound racing. Let’s be clear: greyhound racing is inhumane, and any effort to carve out an exception is something I will oppose. I opposed it with my own bill in the Florida legislature, and I opposed today’s effort to allow it in West Virginia too. While I am relieved today’s effort failed, it doesn’t change the fact that Congress must work to truly protect man’s best friend by ending this practice once and for all.

FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund is vital because disasters don’t wait for Congress to get its act together. They can strike anyone at any time. That’s why I introduced the ADULT Act with @RepTroyCarter to ensure DRF funding does not run out just because Washington cannot do its job. Our bill replenishes the fund so disaster response and recovery efforts can continue without interruption. With hurricane season right around the corner, I strongly urge the House to pass this sooner rather than later.

Today on the House Floor, I took a moment to honor the life of my friend, former Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer. Nancy was taken from us far too soon. As the first Haitian American elected to the Coral Springs Commission, she made history, but that alone does not capture who she was. Nancy was one of the nicest people in the process who advocated for everyone. Nancy had hoped to serve in this body, but she was tragically taken from us one day before she was set to announce her run. It was an honor to talk about her on the House Floor today.

This is a great step in the right direction. Let’s be clear: ending Temporary Protected Status does not make our communities safer. Haitian TPS holders have legal status, and they play a critical role in our local economy, especially in South Florida. They care for our seniors, build our infrastructure, and support our tourism industry. Now that the House has done its part, I urge the Senate to follow suit and preserve legal status for nearly 350,000 people while we work toward a lasting solution.

I’m relieved that a federal judge has temporarily blocked the termination of TPS for Haitians. This ruling provides critical relief for roughly 350,000 Haitian TPS holders who faced losing their status today. But let’s be clear: the underlying policy is still wrong. Haitian TPS holders are legal workers who power our health care system in South Florida. Ending TPS would not make us safer. It would mean fewer caregivers, higher costs, and longer wait times for patients. That’s not smart policy. I urge the Administration to work with Congress on a lasting solution that strengthens our communities instead of tearing them down.
