In the good news column from Tuesday: Marylanders resoundingly affirmed the right to reproductive freedom! Despite fear mongering and deceitful tactics from the opposition, the Constitutional amendment passed with nearly 75% of the vote. Six other states also passed similar protections. I was proud to have voted both in the Senate and at the ballot box for this freedom - and I'm grateful for everyone who played a role in its passage.

In the last month, multiple men have felt comfortable messaging me to call me a slut, a bitch, and a c***. I doubt they (and sincerely hope they don’t) speak to their wives, daughters, mothers, their neighbors this way. But if they are comfortable saying it to me, I know they are comfortable saying behind keyboard in all sorts of forums and groups. And I have to assume this same sentiment is reflected in their voting choices and ideas about public policy. Too many people - and especially too many women - face this kind of vitriol and disgusting language when they enter the arena and put their names on a ballot. That doesn’t make it acceptable. Our community and the women in your lives deserve better.

Your vote, your business.

This November, reproductive freedom is on the ballot in Maryland. As abortion rights are under attack across the country, it’s more important than ever that Maryland remains a safe haven for women to make decisions about our own body. I’m voting “YES” on Question 1 so that we can protect abortion rights for our daughters, granddaughters, and every generation to come. #YesOn1MD
