These past few weeks have really highlighted to me how the top brass see us as just numbers

I was wondering what to write. Then thought I’ll just post the email I sent all my colleagues. It’s long so happy reading. And so it’s time. After 25 years I am retiring on the 31st I just wanted to write a quick email to some of those that I’ve worked with (that I can remember) to say a formal goodbye.   To say Policing has changed since I was on course 01 of 2000 would be an understatement. From writing off jobs as “LOB” (if you know, you know), taking reports of stolen car stereos, Op Cordless telephone kiosk breaks, woolly pully jumpers, no stab vests, no PPN’s and 1 litre Ford Escorts (but 3 litre BMW Area Car’s). To the modern day…. An indescribable change. The advent of Social Media, Ring Doorbells, even mobile phones and especially the paperwork.    My 25 years have covered mostly response, but also DCID, Burglary Unit and Tasking Teams before ending on Neighbourhoods and the last 18 months just trying to get a George Medal for “Services to CPS Advice files” due to my fractured mental health when the cPTSD caught up with me.   This job is without a doubt one of the hardest, both physically at times but also mentally. We stick ourselves in harms way, get no thanks and a lot of grief, as they say, nobody calls the Police to say they’re having a good day. But one thing about this silly job that keeps us here, doing what we do, is the people we work with. I have spent the last 25 years working with literal heroes every day. The funniest, kindest, supportive, crazy (in a good way), nicest colleagues I could ever asked for. We’ve laughed, cried, screamed, been terrified and also become utterly bemused together. I don’t think many of us would stay in this role if it wasn’t for our friends and colleagues that we spend so much time with,…………… doing “the job”.   The years on response ended up with me becoming mentally scarred (which is partly my own fault – Get that “Trim” if its offered or counselling if you think you’re having a wobble – I DIDN’T UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE) but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. Despite its many many many faults, this job is still the best job in the world and still (as one US Series put it) A front row seat to the greatest show on earth. The very best jobs will outweigh the very worst jobs in my memories. It was described to me when I joined as 95% boredom, 5% sheer terror, yet we stay for that 5% adrenalin jolt as much as the people we work with.   I have no idea what I am going to do next apart from a few months off to decompress and try and start a photography company. I’ll also probably be quite vocal on the Social Media and elsewhere raising awareness for PTSD amongst front line Police officers, something that is obviously now close to my heart.   I’m not having a “leaving do” as don’t really do Socials anymore, however on the 31st of January I shall raise a glass to you all. Keep safe out there and thank you for all you do.   3160, HY103 and formally usually always ZV95 ………………… STATE 11 GOODNIGHT   Jonny G

I’m very sorry to say that after seeing her 14th sunrise Alba left this world today. I think we managed to give her the send off she deserved. She was a very special little girl 💜 (1/8) 🧵

These aren’t protests. 🤦🏼‍♂️ This is deliberate disorder. 🤷🏼‍♂️ You can blame who you want, but the only people to blame are those assaulting Police Officers, causing criminal damage & committing public order offences. 😔 Absolutely disgusted. Stay safe all please. #ThinBlueLine 🚨

@WiltsSpecOps If one is doing precisely 70mph then why should it matter which lane you're in? Nothing can overtake you except an emergency vehicle with suitable lights and audible siren.

This Audi was initially sat in lane 2 for no reason, the moved to lane 3 after #RPU displayed a ‘do not hog middle lane’ sign. Vehicle stopped, driver #reported & educated

Situations like this show we have gone too soft, some European style/old fashioned robust policing should be the immediate response to things like this

I've asked Suffolk PCC Tim Passmore to investigate the closure of Orwell Bridge today and the protocol in place for such closures. While this is an operational decision by the police, it hugely impacts residents and businesses in our county, which I think merits inspection.

@obbsie The amount of paperwork even the simplest job requires is so frustrating, and the bosses keep adding more into the mix

“Who would wanna do The Job? Yeah you’re fighting crime and helping victims, it’s just sometimes it feels the other way round. The Job is being spat on by the people you are arresting and sometimes the people you’re helping. Turning up, when no one else will. Being left holding the baby, or the casualty, or the inmate. The Job is being slaughtered in the media for the mistakes of the few of us amongst, what; 50,000? Being attacked for doing too much stop and search and too little. You’re supposed to leave ‘The Job’ in the locker. Yeah, right. It becomes how you see the world; they’re ’Job’ that car’s ‘Job’, North Face, Jeans, Timberlands, he’s definitely Job. It can be action and adrenaline, but it’s 2% excitement, my 98% routine. But if no one did this or that Job, no one could do ‘The Job’. It’s too much paperwork, too much no realistic prospect of conviction, and too much being called out because someone won’t share the TV remote. The Job is why you missed your kid’s school nativity, and your soon to be ex’s birthday. The Job can be; comedy. It’s the London no one else knows, sights no one else sees. The Job is growing a thick skin and wearing a stab vest over the top, it’s suspecting anyone you meet, but trusting everyone you work with. The Job is for some, what you live for. And for three Officers last year, what they died for. The Job is going to war with the gangs and the thugs and the thieves and that feels good. The Job is hearing a victim’s relief when Officers arrive. It’s stopping things happening, and because they don’t happen, no one knows how bad it would have been. Except other Old Bill who’d rather rip it out of you, than pat you on the back and you’d do the same and it’s a laugh and that’s The Job. But despite all the danger and the distrust, despite all you have to see and do and do without; those who do it wouldn’t wanna do any other Job, than ‘The Job’.” #ThinBlueLine #NewYearsEve 🔥💯🚨
