Echoes of War
Echoes of War@EchoesofWarYT·
Famous Apache leader Geronimo (1829 - 1909), who fought both U.S. and Mexican Army forces along the U.S.-Mexico border regions for much of the second half of the 19th century. Though he was captured several times, his final surrender in 1886 made him a U.S. prisoner of war for the rest of his life. He would often be the centerpiece of U.S. propaganda, including during parades and photo shoots, such as this one, done in 1887. Geronimo used these events to support himself financially after his confinement to a reservation in Arizona.

Born on this day in 1862, Ida B. Wells was a civil rights champion and one of the first investigative journalists in the United States. She was also a feminist and anti-lynching advocate whose reporting documented lynchings in the American south. Wells went on to help found the @NAACP. Thinking of her legacy today.

Thanks to Stephen Bricker for this one! Back when smoking was considered a pleasure Boston had a wonderful pipe and tobacco shop called Ehrlich's. First located at 33 Court St., then 207 Washington St., and finally at 32 Tremont St., the family-owned establishment lasted 100 years from 1868-1968. I remember visiting it often in the 1950s to buy tobacco for my pipe. I'm not sure at which address it had in those years. What I do remember was the door handles were crafted in metal as giant pipes.

In 1987 an estimated 800,000 people flocked to the Golden Gate Bridge for its 50th anniversary. The weight of the large crowd caused the bridge to sag 7 feet, flattening its usual convex shape. Engineer Daniel E. Mohn reaffirmed the bridge was not overstressed due to Bridgewalk '87.
