I visited the source of the River Foss this afternoon to take a water sample. The sample will head over to Helsinki on Monday for analysis of antimicrobial resistance genes.

Day 3 report of the Windermere Arctic Charr monitoring. This is a learning by doing initiative and every day presents some unique practical and scientific challenges. There will some great knowledge exchange opportunities coming out of this project.

Had a fascinating day at the Climate Action Addingham River Wharfe event. There were some great presentations on the wonders of the river and some of the pressures on the river followed by a series of sampling demonstrations.

Ghost pingo #pond resurrection, Norfolk Brecklands. 35+ wetland plants have returned to this lost pond since it was brought back to life for @NorfolkWT <2 yrs ago. Rare species galore. The most successful form of ecological restoration known? @hburningham @tim_holt_wilson

Here are samples of motorway runoff & the visual impact it is having on the river. These samples will be analysed so I'm not just going off the visual impact. This untreated runoff shouldn't be allowed to discharge to rivers without treatment. @IvelRev @SirGeogy @07DeMorgan

Processing of the #BigWindermereSurvey samples in the @LancsUniLEC labs this evening - we see evidence of the #cyanobacteria that @freshwaterbio describe, but we also see how patchy the accumulations are - many samples show no visible evidence, whilst others certainly quite green

Fantastic turn out for our 6th #BigWindermereSurvey! Some of our #CitizenScientists are reporting some small slicks of #cyanobacteria scums along the shoreline of #Windermere. We've found a small bloom of #Woronichinia under our #microscopes. Thanks to all who contributed!

Receiving citizen science collected water samples for nutrients and faecal bacteria for the Big Windermere Survey led by @LancsUniLEC @freshwaterbio this morning. The project is injecting much needed science into the Windermere water quality debate

#OnThisDay in 1859, Charles Darwin's landmark book 'On the Origin of Species' was first published. The work is one of the foundations of evolutionary biology, and one of the most important scientific works of the 19th century. #HistoryOfScience
