India’s poorest pay higher effective tax rates than the rich, finds major new study by Prof Mukulika Banerjee of the LSE. Speaking on cine ink podcast London Vārta: New World Order, Prof Banerjee notes: Lower-income Indians are shouldering a disproportionately heavy tax burden compared with the wealthiest sections of society, according to new research that challenges widely held assumptions about the country’s tax system. Dr Mukulika Banerjee, a leading political anthropologist, has revealed that while everyone pays the same Goods and Services Tax (GST) on everyday items, the impact falls far more heavily on the poor when measured as a proportion of their income. “Everyone pays GST – indirect tax – and the poor in India end up paying a higher proportion of their income in tax than the rich,” Dr Banerjee explained. “If you buy a packet of biscuits and a rickshaw puller also buys a packet of biscuits, the GST charged on that packet is exactly the same for both of you. But the rickshaw puller earns far less than you, so in proportion to his income, he is paying a much higher rate of tax. When you aggregate this across the country, the bottom fifty per cent of the Indian population is paying a higher proportion of their income in tax.” Her findings, part of a British Academy-Leverhulme Senior Fellowship, raise serious questions about taxation, inequality, and the health of India’s democracy. Fieldwork data paints a stark picture of the country’s extreme wealth gap: a daily-wage construction worker, fruit vendor, or pavement tailor earning around ₹30,000 per month qualifies for the top 10 per cent of earners, while half of all Indians survive on just ₹6,000 a month. Meanwhile, the top 1 per cent captures a strikingly large share of national income. #londonvārta #profmukulikabanerjee #cineinkpodcast #hindipodcast

Professor Anita Rampal : “We cannot be replacing human agency and cognitive processes which are meant to be done in a certain way by something which is completely mindless. You don't scroll an answer sheet and then mark it in a linear manner. People are conscious they are being monitored. The camera is there. If someone took longer they said they got a phone call in center. Why this person taking so long on this question? We are not robots and shouldn't be making humans into robots.” Why our Indian's being coerced mindlessly into adapting each human function in the service of digital technology systems that on any objective standard are not fit for purpose and create new problems?

#CBSE's digital evaluation mess Are you confident in the way the system is being evaluated, or do you fear the worst? “I have lost all hope in CBSE. As I have finished my #Class12Examinations, I hope never to encounter an agency like CBSE again. The disappointment is so profound that I cannot even fully comprehend it,” responds Ibrahim Khan, a CBSE student. #NewsToday @SardesaiRajdeep

Clarification Regarding Claim of Compromise of CBSE OSM Portal In a post made by a user on social media, it has been claimed that the CBSE On Screen Marking (OSM) bearing URL: cbse.onmark.co.in was compromised by him on 26.02.2026. This has also formed the basis for a few news articles. At the outset, it is clarified that the Portal used for evaluation of answer-books bore a different URL, which has neither been compromised nor does it have the vulnerabilities indicated in the said social media post. The URL: cbse.onmark.co.in is the testing site only with sample data for internal testing and review purposes. There are no actual evaluation data, marks or other data held on that portal. The Board emphasises that no security breaches have come to light on the Portal deployed for the actual evaluation work. The Board would like to state that this system has been implemented for enhanced transparency in assessments with strong grievance redressal mechanisms built into it and would reassure all concerned about the strong safeguards implemented  to ensure integrity of the platform actually deployed as regards any vulnerabilities. @EduMinOfIndia @PTI_News @PIB_India @PIB_Edu @AkashvaniAIR @airnewsalerts @DDNewslive @dpradhanbjp @sanjayjavin

Complete mess. #CBSE My daughter finally received the scanned copies of 4 answer sheets and to our shock, page number 22 is missing from one of the documents. On top of that, marks have not been awarded for several answers that exactly match the official answer key. And this isn’t limited to just one paper the same issue appears across multiple subjects. Instead of focusing on competitive exams and college admissions, students are being forced to run from pillar to post just to understand why correct answers were ignored or pages went missing. Do the authorities even understand what 30-35 marks can mean for a Class 12 student whose entire future and admission process depends on these scores? This is not a small administrative lapse. This is playing with the careers, mental health and future of thousands of students. Shame on a system that continues to fail students. And shame on those at the helm who continue to remain silent while young lives are pushed into anxiety and uncertainty. The system has failed us once again. Alas. #CBSE @cbseindia29 @AllCBSENews @cbse_guide @dpradhanbjp @PMOIndia

A Brahmin student being called a 'Pakistani' by Modi Bhakts shocked and rightfully hurt many people across ideological lines, including several from the Right Wing itself. Because suddenly, people realised how dehumanising that label is. But for years now, countless Indian Muslims especially those who speak up or question the government or criticise the PM are casually branded 'Pakistanis' or 'Bangladeshis' or a 'Rohingya'. Our loyalty is questioned, our identity is regularly mocked, our citizenship treated as conditional. And the society has normalised it so much that most people don’t even react anymore. An insult that rightfully outraged people when used against a Brahmin student is thrown at Muslims every single day without guilt or an outrage, or without any consequences. No Indian should have to constantly prove they belong to their own country. All thanks to the Media and the Politicians for Normalising this Hate against Indian Muslims.

Let me trace the timeline here because nobody's connecting it. Step 1: Scrape the entire internet. Every book, every article, every conversation, every piece of art, every forum post. Do it without asking. Do it without paying. Step 2: Train a model on all of it. Call it "artificial intelligence." Step 3: Go to BlackRock's Infrastructure Summit and announce: "We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter." Step 3 is where you sell people's own knowledge back to them. On a meter. They took the collective output of human thought, compressed it into a model, and now they want to charge you by the token to access a version of what you and everyone you know already created. One Reddit user put it perfectly: "They stole all this data from us, the people, our life's work, creativity, art, by devouring the internet and blowing through all copyright laws. Now they want to sell it back to us in the form of a utility." Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies. That's the metered intelligence business model. And they're pitching it to infrastructure investors as though they invented water.

We have reached a stage where being a bhakt now is extremely dangerous, I mean bhakts can defend anything the government says and does. What the fk happened to your brains? Why can't you see the way they have ruined this country? It's like the rest of us that question the government are just fire fighting comstantly because no one cares at all about the students, the women, the minorities, the animals. It's exhausting and so stressful because even a kid can tell you what's wrong and right in 12 years. When someone tells us that our press freedom is gone, we become defensive. Aise kaise bola humme? Kyun godi media channels nahi dekh rahe ho itne saal se? The world knows the truth. No one outside India is doing our mahamanav's charan vandana like the press here and his followers in India and abroad. What they have successfully done is branded you, their voter base. The fool, the clown that will jump around defending them for all their mistakes. They've made you stop thinking, stop questioning because hey Motiji ne kara hai toh sochkar hi kara hoga. They made you feel false pride in being a true nationalist for choosing them and supporting them. But they forgot to teach you patriotism sadly, because the highest form of patriotism is to question injustice, uphold democratic practices, the constitution, the law of the land, sovereignty of the state and it's institutions, press freedom, free speech and question the government at every step. Countries that are progressing and where citizens live a good life, good infrastructure and resources, have better per capita income, the press and the citizens now and not in some distant future, question the government on absolutely everything. The government is supposed to work for us, not be worshipped by us. We are being taxed like Singapore, especially the middle class and look at the state of the country and our economy. This is not just a failure of the government but also a failure of citizens. Because of you bhakts, the whole country is suffering.
