Look, it’s simple, a contribution is not co-authorship worthy unless you own a house in the authorship region of Academia. Otherwise it’s just sparkling RA work.

@EllaFlemyng And indeed, once the tool to flag problematic studies is up and running, we’d be very happy to check the citations effect. I agree we are unlikely to see a strong effect, unless the assessments are given high visibility.

Ooo interesting. Lisa Bero says studies assessed as high risk of bias decrease in citations over time compared to low risk studies… would be great to understand whether there’s a similar trend for studies tagged as problematic #CochraneLondon Cynical me thinks maybe not 🤔

@sam_macaulay Run! My kids are still recovering from a seagulls gang attack - stealing our fish and chips on the Kent seaside. To add to the humiliation, teenagers started filming and the whole thing must be somewhere on Tick Tock.

Not just your garden variety “aggressive birds” we normally have to deal with in Australia. These are:

…’The (sun) moustache is letting me down’ …’I am dreading the summer’ After my 2nd pregnancy, I started developing dark spots on my face.  #melasma is not dangerous but it can really impact on quality of life. I built a website to raise awareness mystache.godaddysites.com

Left: Twitter “immunology via screenshot” with 1.7 million views and big claims. Right, Nature article where the *actual scientist* author is bewildered that her own paper, “which didn’t show evidence immune damage” from acute Covid went viral on Twitter with opposite claim. 🤷‍♀️

@murat_kocaoglu_ Hi, I volunteer for a social mobility charity working with secondary schools in the UK - this would be a great session for their students, thanks for sharing! I also really like the idea of having an outreach page on an academic website.

I introduced high-school students to #causality with a mini-game I prepared yesterday for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day #IGED w/ Women in Engineering Program at Purdue. It was a lot of fun! I made the code and slides public. If you are a teacher, feel free to use them.

@devisridhar Many seem unaware of the impact of Brexit on UK HE institutions’ ability to recruit international talent (staff and student)

I’m working on a piece on academia/universities in UK- what do you think most people don’t understand about being an academic/uni life today in Britain?

Are there tractable ways to increase the speed at which we learn whether new drugs are safe and effective? I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with @maureenmfarrell about Paradigm’s new, important efforts to streamline clinical trials. nytimes.com/2023/01/27/bus…

@sam_macaulay So interesting and not too dissimilar from evergreening e.g. finding a second indication for a drug close to the drug’s patent expiration?

Wild appropriability via patenting “peripheral aspects of these products, such as the propellants and delivery devices (secondary patents), and by shifting active ingredients to different devices (device hops), thereby adding new secondary patents.”
William Feldman@wbfeldman

From 2000-2021, manufacturers earned $111 billion on brand-name #inhalers in the US AFTER patents on their active ingredients had expired. How? By patenting other aspects of the products (e.g., delivery devices). New piece out in @JAMA_current jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/… 🧵
