Great to see my new paper w/ Sharapov out! We provide a new way to think about how inventors use design choices to stop #innovation imitators. Cases range from Michelin’s use of proprietary temp. scales through to IBM’s use of digital watermarks in AI models.

You might think that Brisbane would have the highest temps of the “major” East/SE Australian cities, but it really doesn’t. Melbourne is 40 today and I’m not sure we’ve broken 35 yet? We will have 39 next week, but temps here are quite stable with max around 32-34 all summer.

Some nice chapters in here. One interesting idea, forget which chapter, is that in some other sciences, like bio, progress has been enabled by having model organisms, which soc doesn't have.

@Afinetheorem Yeah for sure! Seeing his DuPont book on there reminded me of it. What I love about the Engines Chapter is how it drives home what a young institution the modern R&D system is. And how lucky we are to have seen it created.

@sam_macaulay Definitely know it - I thought about including a chapter of his I like in the DuPont book but had to move it to optional. Too many good ones!

Incredibly excited for my brand new class at Toronto Rotman this fall: Progress! Econ history + theory + history of tech/thought + philosophy on why rare orgs at rare times in rare places accomplish new things. Trying to put rigor onto an idea that is very much in the air. 1/3

I appreciate their candor. And FreakTakes has worked out — people now offer me neat academic opportunities, too But FreakTakes is similar to things I'd write during undergrad. They didn't care. Makes me wonder how dynamic econ/polsci could be w/ different selection processes

As a college senior, I was interested in getting a PhD in PoliSci The guy who ran the Stanford program told me I was a "very unattractive" candidate — mediocre GPA. An economist said the same thing. I figured they might be right. In hindsight, the criteria just seem lazy 1/2

I have accepted an offer to become Chief of Staff to the Deputy Opposition Leader and Shadow Treasurer. I look forward to serving the Australian people by supporting an effective opposition. We will miss all of our friends in America. But we are also excited to be coming home!🇦🇺

Do scholars of econ growth & trade take spying seriously enough?: 1. In 1979 more than half of Soviet defense R&D was based on stolen R&D from West 2. IBM was so thoroughly penetrated that East German companies became almost "illegal subsidiaries"

Not all Nobel Prize-winning discoveries are equal. Surely some are more important than others? How can prove it? Well, there's a quirk where 50 years after a Prize, the foundation reveals the list of *nominees* 1/3

Also, it’s worth noting that this policy has been used by the U.S. in the past too. When Japanese small car imports were challenging domestic auto manufacturers, U.S. pressure -> create joint ventures, share (organizational) technological know how (kaizen/TPS), & localize.

It’s amazing how quickly the tables have turned. China has long used this strategy of pushing for tech transfer in exchange for market access, which I’ve written about previously: high-capacity.com/p/how-china-us…

@sam_macaulay That would have been great - would also like to meet one of your UQ colleagues Terrance Fitzsimmons at some stage as he’s done some great work on leadership and CEOs.

Sounds very much like a repeat of the famous “Cloak and Dagger” trade secret misappropriation case in E.I. DuPont deNemours &Co. v. Christopher where “an airplane [was] the cloak and a camera the dagger.” 🧐

xAI competitors were so shocked by the speed of the Memphis AI supercluster data centre build out (it was done in 122 days vs. typical 3 years)…that they’ve been hiring propeller planes to fly over and study the structure, energy sources and cooling systems
