Mozambique has some of Africa’s largest reserves (>100 trillion cubic feet in the Rovuma Basin). Current production comes from Western-led projects: ✔️Eni (Italy) — Coral Sul & Coral Norte FLNG ✔️TotalEnergies (France) — Mozambique LNG ✔️ExxonMobil (US) + partners (China, etc.) These projects explicitly positioned themselves as alternatives to Russian gas for Europe. Mozambique has invited Russian companies for future participation, but none are currently producing or owning output. First LNG cargoes (2022) went to Europe to help replace Russian supplies. LNG tankers sail from offshore northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado / Rovuma Basin) to European regasification terminals (Spain, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, etc.), then the gas is piped into the EU network and on to Ukraine. ✔️Sea distance: ~8,000–12,000 nautical miles (via Suez or around the Cape of Good Hope) ✔️Travel time: 20–40 days depending on route ✔️Cost: Higher than pipeline gas, but competitive in the global LNG spot market (same way Ukraine already imports US LNG via Greece). Ukraine has no domestic LNG terminals, so all supplies would be indirect via EU infrastructure — exactly like current US/Azerbaijani LNG imports. If implemented the plan is strategic. Not immediate or massive — current volumes are modest, and logistics add cost. In 2024, Ukraine started importing American LNG.
