As a father and grandfather of young children, I know that mental health advocacy and support is critical to ensuring a healthy, functioning society. This Mental Health Awareness Month, join in me in advocating for parents, educators, students, law enforcement, servicemembers, veterans, and the community at-large as we fight for affordable and accessible critical care resources.

Today, I voted to reopen the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to restore stability and safety for all Americans. For 76 days, DHS personnel went without reliable pay as partisan gridlock disrupted critical services. It was past time to end this costly shutdown and secure our homeland. While this vote reopens many subagencies within DHS, there is still important work ahead. I will continue to work with my colleagues to find a responsible way forward to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP).

I recently visited the Urbanna Bridge to see the need for critical improvements firsthand. I’m happy to hear that the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission was awarded a $450,000 grant that will support the preliminary engineering, design, and environmental review needed to move forward with repairing or replacing the failing bridge on Oyster Road. This is an important next step toward strengthening infrastructure, improving accessibility, and supporting the local community.

The violence that occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last night is deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable. Political violence has no place in our country. I’m grateful for the bravery and swift action of the United States Secret Service, who ensured that the President, First Lady, and all those in attendance were evacuated safely.

As a long-time advocate for our nation's seafood industry, I understand the hurdles that fishermen experience when working with the federal government.
