Telecoms, media and randomness. Plus some ultrarunning. Opinions are my own, but don't let that stop you having them too.

@Rob_Kenny_ This should be part of the Turing test. ChatGPT pointed to the possibility (5 below) after I rejected smoke alarm, but did not reason in one shot given I told it the dog was going from room to room too.

Hard-to-locate electronic chirruping in the house. Dog and I go from room to room trying to find the source - bafflingly, it seems to be everywhere. Turns out it was the AirTag on the dog's collar

@benfenton The fact that Pimms drinkers are nationally representative is the biggest surprise here

Forget champagne socialism, Labour's biggest support comes from those whose favourite drink is the alcopop VK - and they do pretty well among Pimms drinkers too.

@Reached @cjayanetti The thing is, it isn’t now material tax avoidance. A decade ago it was one of the things that made it possible for me to go independent. There was a worthwhile tax saving so I could risk lower income. Today, after all the changes to div taxes, it’s fairly marginal.

@cjayanetti @Reached I agree double taxation in itself isn’t an issue. But particularly for small biz owners there is the choice of income tax+NI or corp tax + div tax. If you increase div tax by much, these business will simply switch to drawing money via salary, and you may not raise much

@Reached "double taxation" is one of the arguments I'm least sympathetic to in the whole spectrum of taxation

Last year, if you'd have told me I'd be the next @oxpip Joint CEO, I might not have believed it. But this year, I'm looking forward to another lovely evening at the opera with colleagues and supporters. Don't forget your candles and picnic! oxpip.org.uk
Dr Karen Bateson@KarenJBateson

My first ever time at the opera tonight. The venue was New College Oxford, with a candlelit picnic in the Cloisters. What a treat. Magical. Plus funds raised for @oxpip. I’ll be back next year.

@LRxword I’ve been pondering sentences where this ambiguity might arise: “After taking the elephant through the thorny bushes, the mahout noticed scratches on his trunk.”

I'm sorry but we can stop referring to the torso as the "trunk"? Elephants have a monopoly on trunks, there's simply no room for ambiguity here.

@rorysutherland Except the question was which is the most likely next sentence. I think ChatGPT is right with its guess at the next sentence - it clearly understands how widespread this fallacy is!

@BethRigby For further context, those 6.4% in private schools get 23.1% of A*A*A or better A-level grades (though that still leaves a gap to the 32% of Oxford places they get) ox.ac.uk/sites/files/ox…

Context - according this IFS report (from 2022) 6.4 percent pupils in England go to a private school… ifs.org.uk/inequality/wp-…
Beth Rigby@BethRigby

Agree with @kateferguson4 this is a good thing, but what about this? > “State school pupils took 72.9 per cent of Cambridge’s domestic student intake in 2022, up from 71.6 per cent the previous year, but Oxford’s has stalled at 68.1 per cent. Cambridge rejected almost 7,000 pupils in 2022 who went on to achieve at least A*AA at A-level”🧐
