@haravayin_hogh Problem with games like EU4 is once you reach a certain level of power/stability, you know that unless you make a critical mistake, you've basically already won. It's just a matter of grinding to the end. There's just no point to play outside of the early game.

Exactly wrong. It's the London of oligarchs and second homes that is a gigantic misallocation of resources. Social housing is a massive part of London's greatness as a city. And there is no "economic productivity" without working class labour.

I think the point I am making is that certain people like vibrancy, edginess and multiculturalism because what this preference says about them. (Liberal values, openness, cosmopolitanism ) However their friendship groups are often very upper middle class and often not particularly diverse. So this is a performative expression of taste rather than an actual revealed preference.

@bdquinn Almost by definition you wouldn't pay for it with current revenue. It's about future revenue which is why there were a lot of arguments for Britain and Germany to borrow more in the 10s to invest. Bond markets care about credibility.

Yeah, what bond traders don't like seeing is a spiraling deficit trajectory. They don't care if your government spending to GDP ratio is 40% or 25%. They care if you're paying for it with current revenues or just borrowing yourself into a death spiral.

Twitter has convinced itself that bond market traders are all crazed Randians who hate the state. Not so. The Swedish and the Danish government can borrow at sensationally cheap rates. Bond markets like sound public finances. They don't care about big state vs small state.

@SandyofCthulhu @anishmoonka Curiosity. Curiosity has long been known as a sign of intelligence. Apes aren't curious about their world. People like to point out that there isn't a single mark of human intelligence that animals don't also exhibit: tool use, language etc. Curiosity is the differentiator.

In the 1970s, David Premack wondered if a chimpanzee could be taught to ask a question. He taught Sarah 130 plastic word-tokens. She answered his questions easily. After years of work, she had never asked one of her own. Sixty years later, no signing ape has. A four-year-old human asks about 25 questions an hour. Paul Harris at Harvard counted them: kids ask their parents around 40,000 questions between ages two and five. Premack even worked out a method for teaching an ape to ask. Hide a snack the chimp expects. Wait for her to sign "where is it." He never bothered running it on Sarah. She spent her sessions answering his questions, never asking her own. A normal kid, he pointed out, asks "what that? who making noise? when Daddy come home?" on a loop. Washoe the chimpanzee, the first one taught American Sign Language, knew 250 signs. She could request food. She could sign her name. She once saw a swan and called it "water bird," a sharp invention for an animal she had no sign for. She never asked what the swan was, or where it came from, or anything else. Koko the gorilla knew about 1,000 signs. Kanzi the bonobo understands more than 3,000 spoken English words. Nim Chimpsky, Herbert Terrace's chimp at Columbia (named to mock the linguist Noam Chomsky), strung 125 signs into more than 20,000 combinations. His longest stretch was "give orange me give eat orange me eat orange give me eat orange give me you." He never asked a thing. Joseph Jordania, a researcher in Melbourne, thinks this is the line between us and them. To ask a question, you first have to know that the person across from you knows something you don't. Apes do not seem to get to that step, even after a lifetime of being talked at by humans. Human kids cross that line around their fourth birthday. Apes never do.

Fun fact: rapeseed oil is sold as "vegetable oil" in the UK because the original name was bad for marketing. During the Industrial Revolution, it lubricated steam engines. That was the job. In the 1950s, the FDA classified it as unfit for human consumption. The erucic acid was toxic to the heart. Banned. In the 1970s, Canadian scientists bred a low-acid variant, rebranded it "canola," and walked it onto the dinner plate. Now it's drizzled on salads, baked into bread, and labelled "heart healthy" on the bottle. Industrial lubricant. Renamed. Repositioned. Sold to the public as the responsible choice. In addition to calories, it generously provides oxidative stress, inflammation, and a steady contribution to every chronic disease the country is currently drowning in.
