Researchers have discovered that oxytocin — widely known as the “love hormone” for its role in social bonding — can stimulate the regeneration of heart tissue after injury by activating specialized stem cells. A study led by scientists at Michigan State University found that oxytocin promotes the activation of epicardium-derived progenitor cells (EpiPCs). These multipotent cells, located in the outer layer of the heart (the epicardium), can undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and differentiate into cardiomyocytes, the muscle cells responsible for heart contractions. In experiments with zebrafish, a species renowned for its natural heart regeneration abilities, cardiac injury triggered a significant increase in oxytocin production in the brain. The hormone was then released into the bloodstream, traveled to the heart, and strongly activated the epicardium, accelerating repair. Parallel tests using human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived epicardial cells confirmed that oxytocin stimulates proliferation, EMT, and transcriptional changes in these progenitor cells — outperforming many other tested molecules. The findings suggest that oxytocin acts as a key neuroendocrine signal linking the brain to heart repair mechanisms. Because oxytocin is already approved for clinical use in other medical contexts, researchers see strong potential for repurposing it to treat heart attacks and other forms of cardiac injury in humans. Future work may focus on developing more stable or targeted forms of the hormone to enhance its regenerative effects while minimizing side effects. This research highlights an exciting new avenue for regenerative cardiology, demonstrating how a hormone traditionally associated with emotion may one day help heal physically “broken” hearts. This week the Supreme Court of Finland convicted Christian parliamentarian Dr. Päivi Räsänen of “hate speech” under “war crimes and crimes against humanity” section of their criminal code for a booklet she co-authored over 20 years ago on the biblical view of sexuality: Male and Female He Created Them. The Court also ordered that the booklet be removed from public access and destroyed. This should cause great alarm for anyone who values democratic freedoms, including freedom of speech.
