What are you talking about? There were glowing reviews of Depression Quest on the top few gaming websites because Zoe Quinn was friends with important people at all of them. That got telephone gamed into a sex scandal. And that's what turned a fairly damning piece of hard evidence that it took very little bias, concentrated on only a few people for major outlets to overstate and overpromote games. And it also proved that most of the smaller outlets were more or less copying the big ones, near verbatim, contributing to a greater sense of consensus even though those smaller sites had no cause to be biased at all. It wasn't about Zoe Quinn's conduct at first. It was about how video game journalists had zero journalistic integrity at all. If just knowing the right people was enough to warrant reviews calling you a visionary and a groundbreaker for writing a choose your own adventure book in HTML, then the big publishers were absolutely manipulating review scores and the narratives around their games, and not even spending all that much money to sway opinions. In fact, most of it was happening entirely for free because of the smaller sites regurgitating the mainstream sites' work. The original movement actively downplayed the importance of Zoe Quinn herself, and it actually spawned an earnest effort to support women in the gaming industry. But they were characterized as misogynists because of a small contingent of drama obsessed clingers-on who were amplified and made the focus by the gaming media industry in its retaliation to the actual scandal. They took a few idiots in the peanut gallery and made it look like they were the majority of the movement. Which lead to more idiots like that catching wind of it and reinforcing that perception until the original message and purpose were lost.
