My childhood! We used to walk home from school. Without fear. Without phones. Without trackers. We walked to the grocery store and carried groceries home. Rode bikes and played. We left in the morning and came home when the streetlights came on. Nobody called. Nobody texted. Nobody pinged a location. Mom knew we were alive because we walked in the door starving at 6PM. We built forts out of scrap wood in the woods behind the house. We dug holes. We climbed trees. We fell out of trees. We got stitches and learned something. We played baseball in the street until somebody broke a window. Then wey ran. Then we came back and knocked on the door. Then we worked it off mowing the neighbor's lawn. We walked to the corner store with a dollar. Bought a Coke, a bag of chips, and a pack of baseball cards. We knew every neighbor on the block. The mean one. The nice one. The one who baked. The one whose porch you didn't cut across. We had paper routes at 10. We babysat at 12. We worked summers at 14. We bought our first car with our own money at 16. We read books. We wrote letters (in cursive!!!) We memorized phone numbers. We knew how to read a map. We were bored sometimes, maybe even bored a lot, actually. And out of that boredom came imagination, invention, mischief, and a whole life of knowing how to entertain ourselves. We ate dinner at a table. With our family. At the same time. Every night. Phones weren't there because phones were on the wall. We watched 3 channels. We watched them TOGETHER. We argued about what to watch, and then we watched whatever Dad picked. We went to church on Sunday. We lost games and didn't get a trophy. We failed tests and didn't get a retake. We got cut from the team and went home and got better. We had chores. Mow the lawn. Take out the trash. Feed the dog. Not for an allowance. Because we lived there. We respected their teachers. We stood when an adult walked in the room. We said sir. We said ma'am. We meant it. We had one best friend and five good ones and a whole neighborhood of kids who could knock on the door. Not a thousand followers. Not a group chat. A door. Then we grew up. And SADLY somewhere along the way, we decided all of that was unsafe. So we took it away. America First Always!🇺🇸💪😎🏴‍☠️🇺🇸
