LA of the early 2020s is starting to feel eerily similar to Detroit of the early 1950s: two long-thriving industry cities facing the beginning of a reckoning wrought by technology + outsourcing. AI content and offshore production are gutting Hollywood’s local film/tv industry, which touches 1 in 6 jobs in the area. When a movie gets shot in Toronto or a commercial gets produced with AI, it’s not just the local LA writers and actors that are affected, it’s also caterers, makeup artists, electricians, and so many more who miss out on work. As these losses compound, they can spread like disease to the rest of the local economy. People forget: Detroit in 1950 produced 50% of autos globally and was the 5th biggest city in the US. Now, it makes just 2% of cars and its population has been cut by 2/3, dropping it to 26th.
