An interesting detail many people might overlook in the Odyssey is that Athena put Penelope in a magical sleep while Odysseus and Telemachus slaughtered the suitors who had been stealing all his wealth and harassing his wife while he was gone. Women have a tendency to get in the way of what needs to be done by men to set society right. We just don't have the stomach for that stuff. The ancients understood this and it is evident because it was worked into the plot; Athena knew that Penelope might get worked up, stressed out and interfere detrimentally with the slaughter of the suitors if she were awake.

Paradox of the left is that individual rights that make sexual freedom, free speech and protest possible are broadly associated w/ western enlightenment values, yet the elite left recoils at anything termed "western." So the left won't defend the very value system they rely on.

Male sexuality was left pretty unchecked for most of history—prostitution. Now, after a few decades of liberating women, they completely destroyed the social fabric of civilization and the TFR is so low we’re soon in a demographic cataclysm. But yeah, male sexuality is a problem
Meghan Murphy@MeghanEMurphy

Look, I love men, for better or for worse, but unchecked male sexuality IS kind of evil lol. I’m sorry but men are perverts and many to most will do all sorts of depraved shit if left to their own devices. That is just reality.

@JP14thStar @DanFriedman81 @estherzelda0514 @NickyFrank30 I’m sorry but that is not true. The difference in school funding between NYC and Mississippi, tens of thousands of dollars per student per year, is not due to heating costs. It is driven by teacher salaries and spending on technology, specialized programs etc.

@DanFriedman81 @estherzelda0514 @NickyFrank30 In NYC, Chicago, Baltimore, DC, etc, aging infrastructure and heating costs are huge drains on school budgets. Schools were built a century ago in alot of those places, rising cost per student up to simply maintain that

Perhaps my most woke opinion is that racism is the cause of nearly every major problem in America and is holding the country back. Lack of transit - racism (public transit brings poor black people to the neighborhood) Housing - racism (dense housing means black people, black neighbors bring down home values) Education - racism (public schools = black people) Inadequate social welfare state - racism (black women with Coach purses on welfare) The 1619 Project felt like it explored the roots of that, but I realize now, nobody wanted to hear it and the idea we needed to "educate" the masses was wrong. The masses can use their cultural and political power to silence you.
Ben Dreyfuss@bendreyfuss

The main reason I feel like the 1619 project was pretty annoying is that it basically took a uncontroversial mainstream observation—slavery was bad and abolishing it didn’t solve racism forever—and then spiced it up with “racism is the organizing principe of America” stuff

Exactly. If ICE is not Gestapo, obstructing them is retarded. If ICE is Gestapo, obstructing them is retarded. The French Resistance did not park civilian cars in the middle of Gestapo raids to shout Monty Python insults.
jon kessler@jonkessler20

The paradox? If ICE were in fact Gestapo, and hanged the illegals they catch from meat hooks for a lingering death, stopping ICE might be a good cause. But in that case, obstruction would mean certain death for these activists, i.e. if ICE were Gestapo, there'd be no obstruction.

The problem is that what liberals call fascism is literally just liberalism. What we already did in our past was establish a liberal form of governance in which this isn’t debated or adjudicated on the street. You submit to arrest. And then there is an entire legal process through which you get to defend yourself, one that is really quite sympathetic and forgiving. We already did liberalism. This is just literally what liberalism is. Now, having done this, progressives object even to the idea that somebody could be involuntarily entered into this process. It’s ridiculous and indefensible.

@fisharmor126706 @HomericFuturist You aren't going to spread Jeffersonian ideals to people whose inner monologue is "Give orange me give eat orange me eat orange give me eat orange give me you." That's the past, the experiment with trying it failed in devastating fashion. They have to go back.

Post after post in my Facebook feed from people contemplating cutting off family over their opinions on this ICE shooting, as though they are kings on a throne, arms out stretched, deciding who lives and who dies, who gets access to their presence. Will the thumb go up or down? We’re all on the edge of our seats waiting to see who gains the approval of these utter mediocrities. It’s all so pathetic and narcissistic and embarrassing.

Big difference between liberals and conservatives on the limits of this principle. To liberals, your life has value in every conceivable situation. But conservatives just want the rules to be clear, fair, and easily followed. “Don’t run from the police” meets all three requirements and so isn’t at all problematic under such a framework. Can I understand the rule? Does it have a purpose? Is it easy to avoid the bad outcome? Does the rule produce good outcomes for everybody who follows it? Is the rule fair? Can I easily control whether I break the rule? These question bear heavily on what the conservative thinks of bad outcomes for rule breakers. Liberals on the other hand don’t think any of that is relevant or interesting.

If you actually want to understand this, the key is just recognizing that people are only sympathetic when they think it could potentially happen to them. Sometimes, people think that things can’t happen to them just because they’re members of some favored group. But just as often in modern society, people think that things can’t happen to them because it’s just so clearly the case that some outcomes are related to behavior. Whatever else you think of this ICE shooting, it wouldn’t happen to me, because I wouldn’t ever interfere with federal agents in this way. And if I did and they ordered me out of my car, then I’d exit my car. I’d never in a million years try to drive away. And it’s like this with so many of these cases. We know that we won’t ever be George Floyd, because we are not drug addicts, because we do not trade in counterfeit bills, because we do not have long arrest records, because we would not resist an arrest, and so on and so on and so on. When regular people can see clearly that there are like a thousand off ramps and that the latest victim didn’t take any of them, it’s just very hard for them to imagine that this sort of thing could happen to them.
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

It's become very clear that when conservatives spent decades saying "Don't tread on me", the most important word was ME. Tread on those liberals, go for it. That's awesome. Can we join?

This is a verifiable lie, here's what happened: > Renee Good was part of an organized caravan trying to impede Law Enforcement > 0:19 - ICE surrounds vehicle recording information > 0:21 - Renee Good's lesbian wife starts agitating officers > 0:34 - Officers approach Renee and tell her to get out of the car > 0:38 Renee reverses the car > 0:39 Renee Good's lesbian wife YELLS "Drive babe drive" > 0:40 makes DIRECT EYE CONTACT with the ICE agent > 0:40 Slams on the accelerator into the Agent > 0:41 Agent Fires on Renee neutralizing the threat
