Heroes and history are the destiny of peoples. Stop apologizing for Sir John A. Macdonald.
Stop searching for the middle position. You let our enemies seize initiative and own the narrative.
Be proud. Don't forsake your inheritance

@ClydeDoSomethin @WhiskyThaFox Isaac Brock gave his life. Dying on the battlefield in defence of Canada in Ontario. Charles de Salaberry led the French Canadian Voltigeurs to victory at Chateauguy, both delivering a crushing blow to American forces. We will never apologize for celebrating our heritage.

@Gundamritter @FortySacks A truly benevolent empire, it's a shame that it came to such a hasty end
English

@RodGarfinkle @FortySacks It had also to do that it was a losing proposition in the beginning. Only around the time of the First World War did the colonies begin to become profitable for Germany, and at that exact moment they were taken away by the victorious powers.

German Africa is one of those obscure historical topics, but it was quite impressive. German Togoland in particular was a shining jewel in West Africa. They had succeeded in modernizing the region, setting up primary and secondary schools, as well as trade schools, electricity and railroads, a small modern military and all native police force kept order.
They had rapidly advanced the area so efficiently, that when the colony switched hands to the British, it took them nearly a century to obtain the level of literacy and educational achievement among the natives.
The krauts had a reputation for brutality in the colonies, but they also got the worst lands and the most violent tribes, because they joined the Scramble of Africa late. It seems the German temperament was better suited to pacifying the natives than the British or French, the latter whose African territories were unimpressive save for Rhodesia, whose accomplishments were really achieved by the multigenerational British diaspora there, and not the imperial administration.

I am very supportive of replacing statues the wokes had removed and adding a lot more.
I am definitely very supportive of celebrating this Republic.
This thing is French ugly and the cost of it could pay for all of the above things I just mentioned. Build a monument to John Adams memorial, the man deserves it.

@uncle_deluge Are there Anglo Canadians who yearn to learn French but who simply can't do it because there's no free adult lessons?
English

Adult French lessons are free for immigrants. You know who they aren't free for?

Now that I've been Canadian for like five minutes, I gotta say, I'm pretty surprised that so many anglo Canadians resent the language laws. It's really not that hard to learn french.

@CdnInst4HistEd Can we get one on the RMS Empress of Ireland

When the Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of April 15, 1912, the disaster unfolded in waters not far from Newfoundland — and the island was among the first places to respond.
The first distress signals were received by a wireless station at Cape Race, Newfoundland. Its operators quickly relayed the news to other ships in the area that the Titanic had hit an iceberg and was sinking. Rescue efforts began almost immediately. The operators also kept an anxious public abreast of the position and condition of the Titanic. Without this rapid response the death toll may have been much higher.
Ships operating out of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia joined the rescue and recovery efforts in the North Atlantic. In the days that followed, these vessels helped search the icy waters and recover victims from one of the worst maritime disasters in history.
At the time, Newfoundland was still its own dominion, yet its people and ships were on the front lines of responding to the tragedy.
It would not be the last time. From maritime disasters to wartime rescue missions and humanitarian efforts at sea, Newfoundland and Labrador has repeatedly stepped forward when ships — and lives — were in danger on the North Atlantic.
Sometimes geography places you close to history.
And sometimes it calls you to act.

@UCCavalier You are correct, though. Censorship is never the answer. I will restore your original comment.
English

@UCCavalier I’m sorry you feel that way. The goal of the campaign is to return JAM to City Park. We do so by building consensus and highlighting the good he did. Highlighting his views on race only serves to undermine that goal and is irrelevant, because such views were commonplace inhis day
