I was born in a mill town, in Lancashire, A local cafe was purchased as a coffee shop. It had an exclusive clientele. All male, all young men from a particular background. There weren't many cars around in those days. The cafe was across the street from my home. My mother drummed it into me to KEEP AWAY. I was nearly 11 at the time. I wasn't sure why, but the fear in my mothers eyes showed me it must have been a bad place. My slightly older friend, had just started school at The Convent. Her mother was divorced, very unusual in those days and she worked nights. My friend walked to school and passed the cafe doors everyday. Each afternoon as she came home, a young foreign looking man would be standing at the café doors and said a short greeting. The first few times he was ignored, then one day she smiled at what he said. This continued for some weeks. The exchanges got longer as she became more comfortable. One evening, just after her mum had caught the bus to work, Marie (not her real name) came out and went to the cafe. She went inside. This behaviour continued. I told my mother, who had a word with her mother. The visits stopped for a few days Then restarted. They were even bold enough to knock on her door after her mother had gone to work. There was a distinct change in the girl, she looked unkempt, had started smoking, she stopped playing with me as a friend. She was withdrawn, different. This continued for some time. My mum and dad would talk about the cafe when they thought I wasn't listening. Time went on but there was a shift .. Marie couldn't gain access to the cafe any more. A different older man would block her way. I saw him slap her once and tell her to go home. I told my mum and dad. Knowing her mother was at work and had no husband to step in my dad went to the cafe, he didn't go in he knocked at the door. My dad was a well built man and had served in the war, he had a presence, but was gentle by nature. I don't know what was said , but looking back the body language of the cafe people was submissive, I heard the older man say, We don't want any trouble. Sometimes cars would pull up, and a young white girls would get out and go in the cafe...I didn't recognise them so they were not from my area... This was round about 1967 Was this the beginning of something quite sinister,?
