@HenrySidebiz_2 @Cander_zhu @CleansedTweets Qing handed over the full sovereignty to ROC, by 1971, the PRC became the only recognized representative of China in the UN, replacing the ROC. What part of that don't you understand? Are you starter than Margaret Thatcher?

A little-known fact about Hong Kong: Britain 🇬🇧didn’t legally have to hand over Hong Kong Island & Kowloon in 1997. Only the New Territories. The island was ceded to Britain in perpetuity after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. Kowloon was also permanent. Only the New Territories were on a 99-year lease expiring in 1997. But the New Territories had become completely integrated, water supply, industry, population, infrastructure. Separating them would’ve left the rest unsustainable. China refused any split and demanded the whole territory back. So Britain negotiated the full handover under “one country, two systems.”

@ChaoLIUya @Cander_zhu @CleansedTweets Not the same thing. The PRC has no connection to the Qing. None of the institutions from the Qing era remain. The Qing were not even Han. Britain should have told the CCP to get lost. Or give it instead to Taiwan.

@okaythenfuture @Molson_Hart Northern Vietnam has historical links to China, but not in a simple way. Many Chinese migrants who moved south during chaotic eras were often tougher, more rebellious types, and Vietnam was never fully assimilated like many other groups under Chinese rule. "braver" is the keyword

My biggest surprise of doing lots of business in Vietnam is how conservative people are. I am guilty of thinking that the culture would be pretty similar to China's, but it's not. China cares about rules and risks much less than Vietnam. This is has been South Vietnam mostly, dunno how the North is, but I hear that it can feel like a different country.

@KevinCastley You’re misinformed Kevin, it’s more like 18 million people died of famine before 1949, and 100 million died of famine after 1949. Numbers might be off but that’s the truth, I know relatives who died of famine in the 60s.

Let me say this again: I strongly oppose China helping Vietnam build north-south high-speed rail right now. 1. Vietnam has not abandoned its balancing policy between China, the United States, and even Japan. Most Vietnamese still see this railway project as a juicy prize, and handing it to China is viewed as a big gift. With that mindset, they're bound to impose harsh conditions — such as demanding technology transfers or driving the price down to the bone. Chinese companies are unlikely to make any real profit. 2. But the truth is, Vietnam has no real choice. For the past 20 years, they've been negotiating with everyone — Japan, South Korea, Siemens, France, practically every possible country in the world — but all of them have turned Vietnam down for various reasons. China is effectively Vietnam's only option. 3. On a grassroots level, Sino-Vietnamese relations are still full of deep-seated animosity. In the north, many still remember China's "millennium-long history of invasion." In the south, people continue to believe in Western anti-China ideology. On top of that, the two countries have maritime territorial disputes. In public opinion polls, Vietnam consistently ranks as the most pro-America country in Southeast Asia — second only to the Philippines. This collective mindset among the Vietnamese means that during the construction of the high-speed rail, all sorts of problems are bound to arise, and smooth execution is highly unlikely. Any execution issues will inevitably lead to delays or budget overruns, and small problems will turn into big ones. 4. The Chinese should never think that helping Vietnam build high-speed rail will buy us their friendship. Before 1975, China gave Vietnam endless aid. In 1978, the two sides went to war. Over the past thousand years, the only times Sino-Vietnamese relations were good were when Vietnam obediently served as China's tributary state. Of course, international relations today won't return to that kind of tribute system — but the underlying mentality is similar. Right now, the Vietnamese are simply not ready. 5. I believe China should make Vietnam wait another ten years. Let them get desperate enough before we agree to do it. By then, China will not only be able to secure decent profits, but will also face far fewer problems on the execution level. If the Vietnamese get angry and try to pressure China by cozying up to the US or Japan, that's not necessarily a bad thing. China needs to strengthen its military presence in the South China Sea anyway — they need something to do.

@CleansedTweets I started watching some K-dramas during lockdown and got completely hooked. The South Korean girls in those shows are astoundingly beautiful. It's also really hard to guess their age. I saw one show where I thought the actresses were the same age, but there was a 25-year gap!
