THE WATCHDOG THAT WATCHES NOBODY A baby died. Her name was Ida. She was six days old. The Care Quality Commission sent an inspector to look into her death at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust (@UHMBT). That inspector, Ian Kemp, says he wrote a hard report. He says the CQC watered it down before anyone saw it. Three hours before Ida's inquest was due to start, Kemp emailed the coroner directly. The inquest was halted. The CQC's lawyers told the court his allegations were not recognised. The coroner concluded Ida died because of the gross failure of three midwives to provide basic care. This is the same trust. The same hospital system found guilty in 2015 of a lethal mix of failures that killed 11 babies and a mother. Investigator Bill Kirkup told Ida's inquest the internal review praising staff had all the same shortcomings as the institution he had dissected a decade earlier. The trust's internal investigation after Ida's death found no care failings. It praised the great cohesion and communication of the delivery suite team. A regulator that softens its own inspector's findings. A trust that investigates itself and gives itself a clean bill of health. And a family that spent years fighting just to be told what anyone paying attention already knew. Source: @IndexCensorship / @ITVGranadaRpts / @BBC / @ComputerWeekly |

This is one of the people we're relying on to lead change, FGS. Where's the energy? Urgency? Drive for fundamental change and the accountability necessary for it? Anyway, this was our 'official' response, quoted by Sky here: news.sky.com/story/nhs-to-o…

And best hope you’re not “the unlucky one” in this game of Russian roulette, because if so, your life will change forever. For us, the NHS has proven it is NOT a safe place to have a baby. Sadly, the evidence confirms this.
Aubrey’s Dad@DadOfAubrey

“The NHS is a safe place to have a baby.” That’s a powerful reassurance. But 65% of services are rated not safe by the Care Quality Commission. So what does “safe” actually mean? No harm? Or just no catastrophe this time? #MaternitySafety news.sky.com/video/share-13…

Families aren't asking for sympathy. They're asking for answers. And too often, they don't get them. Same harm should mean the same scrutiny. Right now, it doesn't.

@FionaWinserRamm @EmilyJBarley @CMidOEngland @laurabundock They blame mothers, they lie, destroy evidence, they do inhumane acts. What have you done again to ensure these staff are responsible, accountable for these actions? Your comments I feel have given zero hope to the public.

After falsely reassuring the public that the NHS is a safe place to have a baby, @CMidOEngland’s closing remarks are to “raise your concerns” because “they want to see you and they want to care for you”. Except when they don’t. 1/
Emily Barley@EmilyJBarley

Here's @CMidOEngland Kate Brintworth's interview with @SkyNews, in full. Watching it was, for me, like being repeatedly punched. Devastating. The actual CMO dodges the questions, is dismissive, uses minimising language. It amounts to a denial. youtube.com/watch?v=r-8GdH…

Maternity: Right to Recover Campaign
@steveyemm Completely agree. Whatever changes are made to systems and structures going forward, the key question remains: how was such a profound systemic failure allowed to develop? It clearly didn’t happen overnight. Only a statutory public inquiry can properly establish accountability.
BabylossMummy@babylossmummy

This 👇 thank you @steveyemm for advocating for families. Your 💯 right a public inquiry is most definitely needed #maternity #publicinquiry #nottingham #unsafecare

@DadOfAubrey @wesstreeting @DHSCgovuk @NHSEngland Totally agree! How is 65% equated to safe! Any mention yesterday with how the NHS trusts deals with the 35% that are not safe!? How they rip families lives apart by lying, concealing, gaslighting… the list goes on! even when they have just lost their child!

We need people, especially our representatives and clinicians, to stop using language that is not evidenced or uses a narrow definition of the word ‘safe’. Perhaps @wesstreeting, @DHSCgovuk, or @NHSEngland could issue an agreed definition or guidance.

In Parliament yesterday @tonyvaughanMP, @LizziCollinge, & @ConnorRand4ASW said the “vast majority of births are safe”. How can that be true when 65% of maternity units are rated not safe? What definition of “safe” is being used? Safe care, or just survival?

The best way to make NHS maternity care safer would be to make sure every pregnant mum knows from the outset where the buck stops for her and her child’s care - my question to @wesstreeting
