@HistorianDiary Contingent faculty like myself are fighting to make sure we aren’t replaced by an AI. AI ceos are telling people that they want their products to replace human ability to think. And there you are feeding the beast to save yourself a few minutes

@RyneClos There are tools for citations for years. It is an option to use them. It is the user’s responsibility to double check. Often, it saves time so that you can work on other things, such as reading, writing, or proofreading.

I used Claude for the first time to create a full bibliography from my endnotes, and it worked well. It took about ~15 minutes, though I still spent more than two hours double-checking everything. Even so, it saved me a great deal of time.

@HistorianDiary I understand that. But generative AI is a step too far. Every academic should stay away from it and denounce it always. It is obviously actively harmful for society and for our students. Saving some of your time is not sufficient justification for using it

@HistorianDiary Presumably to get your work published in a specific publication. Is that not the essence of academic work? If we farm out all th tedious parts of our work to mindless and destructive robots, where will we stop? What will be left for us?

@HistorianDiary In my discipline, which is history, I need to have both in text citations and a complete bibliography to have proper citations. Creating both is necessary and is very much an academic task.

@RyneClos I do have “proper” citations. I just needed to have them in a separate document. This is called format editing.

@HistorianDiary Creating a bibliography is absolutely an academic task. Submit a book or article without proper citations and see what your peer reviewers think about it.

@PitcherList @nick2822 Thanks. It’s my particular view that hitters are far more interesting than pitchers. Good to know you’ll do them too

@RyneClos @nick2822 Hitter cards are a little trickier as one game isn’t enough of a sample to present fun data. I’ll explore some solutions with the team and make it happen - we really need to nail those, too

@podoffame @baseball_ref I’d have Griffey first but Clemente last. He’s my favorite of the four but definitely behind other 3. I think I’d have Off over Trout, but that’s very close

@NewLeftEViews @triofrancos How is China aggressive in its immediate backyard? Not challenging you; genuinely asking. Because it doesn’t seem they’ve carried military aggression since 1950s

China is quite aggressive and territorially self-aggrandising in its immediate backyard, but restrained beyond. Even occasional border skirmishes with India are basically fought with sticks and stones. Outside of the military build up triggered by the US during MAGA 1.0, China is not interested in projecting power globally. And why would they? The legitimacy of its political class is not bound up in maintaining global hegemony. You have to inhabit a different plane of existence if you think those aspects of China’s foreign policy warrant a comparison to the full-spectrum vandalism of the US and its satellites which has left hundreds of thousands of corpses and ruined countries in its wake.
Jostein Hauge@haugejostein

It’s baffling how some people still frame China’s rise as a global military threat relative to the US. In the past year alone, the US has bombed *seven different countries.* China hasn't launched a major military strike against another country since 1979.

@MattPolProf As a historical materialist, this seems undeniably true to me. They have power and power allows them to dictate terms to the likes of you and me. What does power mean if not the ability to make meaning

In 2004 a Bush official, probably Karl Rove, mocked the "reality based" community; insisting that empire and power makes its own reality and the nerds and losers can deal with it. American conservatism hasn't changed because this attitude towards reality hasn't changed.

France, Germany and the UK have issued a statement condemning Iran's "disproportionate" response. I want to know what they think is a "proportionate" response when invaders assassinate your head of state and civilian leaders in an explicit campaign to destroy your government.
